: YES!!! Please! Every time I read an article in the popular press about
: how these magical agents are goint to revolutionize the world I just
: cringe. Sooner or later people are going to find out that its just
: a different verse to the same old song, and be similarly disillusioned.

Of all such Doomsday articles, the most convincing and hence most
frightening is "Technological Singularity" by Vernor Vinge in the
winter 1993 issue of the Whole Earth Review. If there is someday
a Tsukuba Tribunal in judgement of AI researchers, along the line
of the Nuremberg Tribunal in judgement of villainous politicians,
our defense and apology will be that we had an Image-of-God right
of obedience to the ancient Greek precept of "Know Thyself!" Our
self-knowledge makes the AI possible; the rest is a human choice.
