This tape contains the "hum" concordance and textual analysis
package. The C source code resides in the directory "src". It can be
compiled with the "make" command, which will send executable programs
to the directory "bin". A tutorial introduction, which may have to be
revised for your installation, is in the directory "doc". Unformatted
manual pages for the individual programs reside in the directory "pgs".
They can be nroffed into the directory "man". All directories contain
"README" files with cursory instructions.

It is suggested that you install the directories "bin" and "man"
in a place that is easily searched by the Bourne shell or the C shell.
At UC Berkeley, the programs reside in "~hum/bin", and the manual pages
are in "~hum/man". (The tilde expands to the full path name of the "hum"
account on various systems.) The "hum" package could also be installed
in "/usr/hum/bin" and "/usr/hum/man".
