ever consider that it might be our own biology? 

there's a guy by the name of Massad Ayoob who teaches combat shooting 
techniques. obviously, stress is a major issue in those sorts of 
situations, so he's done quite a bit of study into the subject. one of
the things he's found is that many of the effects reported by people
who've come under fire are the same as those reported by people who've
had "near death experiences". these include everything from tunnel
vision and auditory exclusion to tunnels of white light and (in
extreme cases) out of body experiences. adrenaline can do some funky
things.

i've experienced some of these effects myself in competition shooting,
where very little was actually at stake. one of the things Ayoob points
out is that these effects can be limited with training and awareness
of why they're happening.

there's very little one can do to train for death, however, so i won't
be the least bit surprised to feel like i'm standing three feet behind
myself when i die, just like i did that first day i stepped up to the
shooter's box.
