I guess it is, as someone famous must have once said, infinitely worse to 
be ignored than it is to be infinitely hated. I have never given much 
thought to the psychology of newsgroups, but they seem to stem from a 
deep-seated need for individuals to be accepted on a mass scale.  Sort of 
like everyone's own little 15 minutes of fame.
