                       KURT GOEDEL SOCIETY

                     Invitation to Membership

History and Organization
------------------------

The Kurt Goedel Society is an international organization for the
promotion of research in all areas of logic, in philosophy and the
history of mathematics, above all in connection with the biography of
Kurt Goedel, and in other areas to which Goedel made tributions,
especially mathematics, physics, theology, philosophy and Leibnitz
studies. It was founded in 1987 and is chartered in Vienna. Its
founding president was Prof. Hao Wang.

Its activities are coordinated by the executive board consisting of
the president, the vice president, the secretary, the treasurer, and
their deputies, as well as the archivist of the Goedel archive, the
editor of the Yearbook, and the chairperson of the organizing
committee of the Collegium Logicum lecture series.

Activities of the Society
-------------------------

* The Society undertakes and supports research in the areas mentioned
above through the activities of its members and through granting
financial support.

* The Society maintains the Kurt Goedel Archive, collecting primarily
material on the life and work of Kurt Goedel and his relations to the
Vienna Circle. The Archive is connected with the recently founded
Vienna Circle Archives of the Institut "Wiener Kreis".

* The Society hosts the biannually held Kurt Goedel Colloquia. The
first colloquium was held in Salzburg in 1989, the second in
Kirchberg/Wechsel in 1991. The third Kurt Goedel Colloquium will take
place in Goedel's hometown, Brno, in 1993. Invited speakers at the
previous Colloquia have included R. Gandy, J. Hintikka, R. Jensen,
and H. Wang. The Society also held a section on logic at the
symposium "Wien-Berlin-Prag" in Vienna in 1991.

* The Society organizes a continuing lecture series, the Collegium
Logicum in Vienna. Among the distinguished speakers have been
H. Barendregt, E. Boerger, D. van Dalen, J. Hintikka, W. Hodges,
T. Jech, M. Magidor, V. Marek, G. Mints, D. Mundici and R. Reiter.

* The Society publishes the annual Yearbook of the Kurt Goedel
Society, which contains papers presented at the Collegium Logicum and
at the Goedel Colloquia.

* The Society is preparing a book series on logic and the life and
work of Kurt Goedel. Members of the society have also been involved
in the making of a TV program on Kurt Goedel and have assisted in the
publication of Goedel's collected works.

* The Society promotes, through its members, education in logic,
especially at the Viennese universities.
