Well, I won't jump in except to say that I think his arguments are
iffy too.  Actually I'd probably argue for "nonsense" most days.  A
few slightly less controversial (though not much less!) books are:

  Daniel Dennett  "Consciousness Explained"
  Michael Lockwood "Mind, Brain and the Quantum"
  Marvin Minsky "Society of Mind"
  Hans Moravec  "Mind Children"

There's a nice collection by Margaret Bowden (sp?) the name of which
escapes me.  Something like "Philosophy of AI".
