There will be a completely open Othello tournament on the Internet Othello
Server (IOS: telnet faust.uni-paderborn.de 5000) this coming Saturday,
April 1st. This tournament is open to computer programs, humans, and
humans who wish to consult computer programs for help (since the top
computers can beat most, if not all, of the world's best humans).

If you're interested in entering a program (or yourself), please contact
Ola Hansson (unic@df.lth.se) in advance so he has an idea how many
entrants to expect and so he can make arrangements regarding a suitable
starting time to accommodate all entrants.

Note that to prevent a possible conflict-of-interest situation, only one
entry per person is allowed. Also, to permit rounds to take place in the
time indicated, all programs must report the actual time elapsed (NOT the
CPU time used).  Time controls will be 25 minutes per player per game;
Ola hopes to complete a full seven round Swiss-style tournament. In the
event of an odd number of entrants, the computer player "scorpion" will
probably be entered to prevent byes.

Future open IOS tournament will probably be held on the first Saturday of
every even-numbered month, and human-only Othello tournaments are held on
IOS on the first Saturday of every odd-numbered month (contact me for
information about these). Tournament announcements may not in general be
posted here; if you'd like to be updated on upcoming tournaments and
previous tournament results, send me e-mail and I'll add you to a mailing
list I maintain for that purpose.
