Marathon on the Mac, and I believe DOOM on the PC, both have this
characteristic: they implement a simple physics model, and there are editors
available that allow you to futz around with the model.  Toss in bitmap editors
for the monsters and 3D editors for the levels, and you've pretty much got a
totally open-ended 3D action game creation system--which is essentially what
DOOM, Marathon, et al are.
