Hi Everyone,
This is just a reminder to all of you who are presenting papers at ICGA93.
You need to make sure and register for the conference. Registration for ICGA93
isn't automatic (or free) for presenters or other authors. I've posted a registration
form to GA list recently, but if you need another copy, please be sure and contact me.

See you in Champaign!
Rob.

The Fifth International Conference on Genetic Algorithms (ICGA-93), will be
held on July 17-21, 1993 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
This meeting brings together an international community from academia,
government, and industry interested in algorithms suggested by the
evolutionary process of natural selection. Topics of particular interest
include: genetic algorithms and classifier systems, evolution strategies,
and other forms of evolutionary computation; machine learning and
optimization using these methods, their relations to other learning
paradigms (e.g., neural networks and simulated annealing), and mathematical
descriptions of their behavior.

The meeting will include pre-conference tutorials, invited speakers, and
workshops.

A registration form is included below.

Subject: Participation request - workshop on hierarchies in classifier systems

*** CALL FOR PARTICIPATION (and name corrections) for
*** Workshop on Discovering of Long Action Chains and
*** Formation of Hierarchies in Classifier Systems

When: July 20 or 21st during ICGA (Exact date/time to be determined)

Our apologies for a belated workshop announcement. Having
but recently found that our workshop proposal was accepted,
we hope that this information will nonetheless reach everyone
who is interested in this topic.
By the way, I know that I am last name-challenged (isn't that
the correct current phraseology), nonetheless the correct
version, together with an existing e-mail address is:
  Alex Shevoroshkin (Alex_Shevoroshkin@um.cc.umich.edu)
Now for the workshop.

Description: This workshop will examine previous attempts and
currently proposed methods of inducing classifier systems to
learn long action chains and form various other hierarchical
structures. The topics of interest include, but are not
 limited to:

 1. Discovery and maintenance of long action chains
--- Methods enabling search for and discovery of long action
chains. Is it realistic to rely on tags.
--- Maintenance of long action chains.
--- Error recovery and reaction to novel environments.
--- Theoretical results related to any of the above.
 --- Relevant applications.

 2. Formation of hierarchies in classifier systems.
--- Representational aspects - how to code a problem.
--- Methods enabling search for and discovery of hierarchical
structures. Does the structure depend on available feedback?
--- Maintenance and change of hierarchical structures.
 --- Relevant applications.

The workshop will consist of short summaries of past and current
research, followed by a group discussion in which all attendees are
encouraged to make comments and pose questions.

Presentations: If you would like to present a short (5 to 10 minute)
summary of your research/thoughts related to acquisition of long
action chains or hierarchical solutions of other problems using
genetic algorithms and classifier systems, please send a one or two
paragraph description of the research, along with your name and
e-mail address to one of the organizers (e-mail addresses below).
 The exact time limit
for summaries will depend upon the number of participants, but will
not exceed 10 minutes and will be strictly enforced. Overhead
 projector will be available.
