I just ordered Holland's "Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems"
from the University of Michigan Press. They do not have a paperback
edition available. They DO have hardcover copies available for $14.95
(pretty cheap compared with most scientific hardcover books).
Their current inventory is just over 100 copies. They accept
Mastercard, Visa, and AMEX as forms of payment. Mailing costs are
approximately $2.00 for UPS.

The number for the University of Michigan Press is (313) 764-4394.

Subject: Background material on GAs

I am a physical chemist who has only just seen the light and
discovered GA. I am working on a chemical problem which I think
could benefit from a GA approach, but know too little about such
algorithms to be able to make use of this approach yet.

Could someone suggest books/conference notes/etc that would
provide a clear introduction to the subject for a computer-literate
but GA-illiterate scientist?

    Many thanks.

D. E. Goldberg, Addison-Wesley: Reading, 1988.

Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems,
J. H. Holland, Univ. Michigan Press: Ann Arbor, MI, 1975.

Induction: Processes of Inference, Learning, and Discovery,
J. H. Holland, K. J. Holyoak, R. E. Nisbett and P. A. Thagard,
MIT Press: Cambridge, MA, 1986.

Genetic Algorithms and Simulated Annealing,

Subject: ftp old issues of ga-list

Is it possible to use anonymous FTP to log onto some machine
and obtain old issues of the ga-list? I know that many of us
who misplaced previous mailings would find this very helpful.

The machine from which we send GA-List does not permit anonymous FTP.
However, I'll be happy to send back issues on request. Let me know
which issues you'd like. Send requests to GA-List-Request@NRL-AIC.ARPA

Subject: Tutorial at GA Conference

Hi John,

I like the idea of tutorials but I'd like to go even further and dedicate the
first day of the conference to reviewing and solidifying the things that
we feel confident that we know about the field. I think that this would
give newcomers a leg up in doing research. I think that it would also
be good for the "old men" of GAs who I bet don't agree on nearly so much as
they think they do. John Holland has recently been asking for theories as
well as empirical results - this would be the place where we could put all
the theories and proofs on the table.

Also I'd prefer not starting on Sunday and I think that we should definitely
not charge for the tutorials.

Could we please hear from those who have implemented Goldberg and Richard-
son's sharing functions( second ICGATA proceedings)??

Subject: GA's and regression

Hello Ga World,

We are planning on using a GA to calibrate a regression model.
I have read De Jong and Smith, "Genetic Algorithms Applied to the Calibration
of an Information Driven Model of U.S. Migration Patterns".

Has anyone else applied GA's to regression?

Subject: GA-list

I was not exposed to genetic algorithms before. Recently, I start
to read some literatures in this area and become very interested now.
Therefore, I would like to be join GA-list. My intended APPLICATION AREA
will be something in Computer Science but no specific application is in
my mind yet. Obviously, I don't have any specific GENERAL APPROACH,
GA TOOL, RESULTS, and PROBLEMS yet!

Thanks, and hope to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Please add me to the GA-LIST. I am interested in investigating the
possibility of appling GAs/Classifier Systems to automate inductive
	learning in Intelligent Knowledge-Based Systems.

	Thanks.
