Subject: Holland "Adaptation in Natural and Artifical Systems"

Perhaps some of the members could help me with my quest. I tried to get
a copy of Holland's "Adaptation in Natural and Artifical Systems" and
got the following reply on a postcard:

"Out of Print: The publisher does not have any copies of this book left
in stock and does not plan to produce more. We have no way of obtaining
the book for you."

I would really love to own a copy of this book.

Subject: LCSs and Neural Nets

I've been trying to define in simple terms the difference between
Learning Classifier Systems and connectionist models. This is
what I've come up with so far:

Each systems has four things: an input, an output, a training
function, and a reward function. In an LCS, you give the system
an input, get an output, give it a reward, and it figures out
its own training function. In a connectionist system, you
give the system an input and a training function, get an output,
and the system figures out its own reward.

Of course, this is designed to be oversimplified, but I'm trying
to capture in only a few sentences the essential differences
between the two. Any comments? suggestions? flames?

Subject: Design a Winning Logo, Win a Conference Proceedings

The Conference Committee is looking for a few good people to dream up
a logo for the 1989 International Conference on Genetic Algorithms.
Please submit your written ideas, sketches, or drawings to

          Dave Goldberg
          Department of Engineering Mechanics
          210 Hardaway Hall
          The University of Alabama
          Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-2908

on or before August 12, 1988. The final logo design will be prepared
by a professional artist. Anyone who submits a suggestion used in the
preparation of the final logo will receive a free copy of the
Conference Proceedings.

Subject: GA Conference 1989

Next year's GA Conference is tentatively being planned for
the Washington DC area in June or July. More details will
be announced as they become available.

The Conference Committee would like your input on a couple of points.

1. Start on Sunday? A number of conferences have taken to starting
on Sunday to facilitate Saturday travel in order to get cheaper air
fares. Does anybody have strong feelings one way or the other on this
point?

2. Tutorial? Is there interest in one or more next year? If so,
at what level and of what length? Are tutorial attendees willing to pay
additional fees in return for more formal tutorials with materials, etc?

Please respond to GA-List@nrl-aic.arpa.

Thanks.
