BIOSIM README File

This directory contains the distribution of the BIOSIM simulator and
the online-help-system. BIOSIM is a biologically oriented neural
network simulator that allows one to simulate realistic model neurons.
A neural network can be created by using the interactive network editor
which is part of BIOSIM. Parameters could be changed via context
sensitive menus and the results of the simulation can be visualized in
graph windows for neurons and synapses.
Further information can be obtained by printing the manual biosim.ps in
this directory or using the online-help facility in BIOSIM.
To install BIOSIM you only have to know where the X11- and Motif-Sources
of your computer reside. If you don't know this, ask your system
administrator for assistance. To install BIOSIM just type INSTALL after
reading this. The installation process is interactive and you have
allways the chance to abort this process by pressing CTRL-C.
BIOSIM was developed by Stefan Bergdoll at BASF-AG in Ludwigshafen
(West-Germany).

The use of the BIOSIM simulator is free of charge.
I expect that if you use this simulator as the basis for published
scientific work, references to this simulator is given when appropriate.
See also the file COPYING in the same directory as this file.

DISTRIBUTION

BIOSIM can be obtained from ftp.uni-kl.de (131.246.9.95).
The compressed tar file (biosim.tar.Z) is available in the directory:
pub/bio/neurobio.
There exists also a file biosimpc.zip which is a PC based version
of BIOSIM running under WINDOWS 3.0 and greater. The PC-Version has
not the same functionality as the UNIX-Version and was intended for
teaching purposes.
During the installation process a mail is send to me, that gives me
information about how often the program was installed and on which
operating systems it was done. This is useful to inform the users
of new releases of the program.
