CMU web authentication services

Available services

There are currently (as of July 9, 2013) three single sign-on web authentication services at CMU:

SCS WebISO

  • Managed by SCS Computing Facilities
  • Supports authentication only for SCS accounts
  • Currently uses PubCookie as the authentication mechanism

CMU Web Login

  • Managed by CMU Computing Services
  • Supports authentication for both SCS accounts and Andrew accounts
  • Depending on server configuration, can support authentication for users from other institutions (e.g. Pitt).
  • Uses Shibboleth as the authentication mechanism

CMU WebISO/Pubcookie

  • Managed by CMU Computing Services
  • Supports authentication for both SCS accounts and Andrew accounts
  • Uses Pubcookie as the authentication mechanism
  • This service is scheduled to be retired on August 1, 2013. The replacement offered by CMU Computing Services is the CMU Web Login service.

Choosing and installing an authentication service

If you are the administrator for a SCS web server and plan on using a CMU single sign-on service to protect content, you should select a service to use based on how well the service's features meet your needs.

Your server must have a SSL certificate signed by a recognized certificate authority in order to use a single sign-on service. If you don't already have a SSL certificate for your web server, see our web server certificate documentation for information on how to obtain a signed certificate.

For information on installing the software for an authentication service on SCS hosts, please contact help@cs.cmu.edu.
