SCS Computing Facilities Support-service Charges

SCS Computing Facilities is a 100% recharge center and charges monthly fees to recover the costs of providing services. There are two general classes of charges:
  • User-based account charges
  • Machine-based services
All fees must be paid from internal CMU accounts; we cannot accept personal funds.

Important notice: User and machine charges are not dropped unless you explicitly request that.

User-based account charges cover the following services:

  • User account (Windows- and Unix-based login)
  • Kerberos (secure authentication)
  • Email (reading & sending)
  • HelpDesk support (walk-in, phone calls, and email)
  • Remote network access (via iPass and VPN)
  • Printing (unlimited B&W, color, posters)
  • AFS (file storage, home-page hosting)
  • Technical procurement
  • Netregistry (access to shared network-resources)
  • Access to general-purpose Linux computing
    resources (linux.gp.cs.cmu.edu)
  • Windows Terminal Server
  • Operations monitoring (24x7)

Machine-based services

Services available for supported computers include:
  • Networking
  • Machine support
    • Hardware support and repair
    • Software licensing and support
  • Backups
  • Machine room support
Rates for machine charges (CMU access only) cover the services listed above. In addition, hosts located in the SCS machine room are charged a fee that covers 24x7 monitoring by Operations and other costs associated with maintaining this resource.

Costing-notice email

In certain situations, SCS Facilities staff will send costing notices regarding user accounts and support charges. These situations include:
  • Service-charge changes
  • Oracle string expiration
  • Oracle string delinquent
