Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection

SCS Computing Facilities now includes Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) as part of our baseline Windows software suite. SEP extends the Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) utility, previously deployed with the SCS baseline for many years, and now incorporates antispyware protection. As a result of this upgrade, we will discontinue Webroot Spy Sweeper as part of the standard baseline installation and will remove it from all SCS-supported Windows hosts.

See the associated FAQ page for answers to common questions, including how to install SEP if you are currently using Spy Sweeper Home Edition.

Some users may already have the SEP installed, as we've been actively deploying it on all new Windows installations since August 2008. To determine if you already have SEP, check the Symantec version on your machine. If your system already has SEP, you need not reinstall it.

We encourage all Windows users to install SEP at their earliest convenience. The new installer is now available on the Monolith server: "\\monolith.srv.cs.cmu.edu\pc_dist\symantec\endpoint protection\11.0.2"

Running the SEP installer will automatically uninstall Spy Sweeper if it's detected. Otherwise, the installer will continue to install SEP as expected. Be aware that this procedure may take approximately 5-10 minutes. During the installation, it may appear that nothing is happening, but have patience: It is working (quietly). When the process completes, you will be prompted to restart your computer.

Starting on February 9, 2009, SCS Computing Facilities will begin automatically updating all hosts that do not have SEP installed. If you have questions regarding the SEP upgrade or removal of Spy Sweeper from your computer, please contact the SCS HelpDesk, <help+@cs.cmu.edu> or x8-4231.
