Phase-Out of Support for RedHat 7.1

Phase-Out of Support for RedHat 7.1

This announcement is to inform the SCS user community that SCS Computing Facilities will be phasing out support for RedHat 7.1. Beginning August 1, 2006, RedHat 7.1 systems will not receive Facilities support, which includes software patches, backups, and hardware support. Machines that are running RedHat 7.1 will have the following options:

  1. Retirement: If the functions of an older machine are no longer needed the machine may be retired and removed from support. SCS Computing Facilities will assist the user with this process by physically removing the hardware and the machine information in the appropriate databases. If any data is needed, SCS Computing Facilities will assist the user with the migration of the data to other supported machine(s).
  2. Upgrading the Operating System: If the existing hardware can run a supported version of Linux such as RedHat 9 or Fedora Core 3, SCS Computing Facilities can assist with the upgrade of the supported machine.
  3. Upgrading the Hardware and Operating System: If the existing hardware is not able to run a supported operating system an upgrade may be performed on the machine or a new machine may be necessary. There may be some cost involved with this solution.
  4. Do Nothing: Support for RedHat 7.1 will be phased out, but Facilities will not turn off existing machines that are not upgraded. NOTE: backups will not be performed and repairs will not be possible to these machines.

Please review the functions of the RedHat 7.1 systems that may be in operation in your area and determine your course of action. SCS Computing Facilities will contact RedHat 7.1 system owners with information about each of the individual systems.
