Campus Wide Virus Alert & Instructions!

Updated Alert Information

SCS Computing Facilities will be picking up the new definitions from Symantec, however if individual users would like to manually update thier virus definitions the instructions are given below in the Security Response message from Symantec.

Symantec Security Response

Symantec Security Response has determined that the sample(s) that you provided are infected with a virus, worm, or Trojan. They have created RapidRelease definitions that will detect this threat.

Please follow the instructions to download and install the latest RapidRelease definitions.

Downloading and Installing RapidRelease Definition Instructions:

  1. Open your Web browser. If you are using a dial-up connection, connect to any Web site, such as:
  2. Click this link to the ftp site:

    If it does not go to the site (this could take a minute or so if you have a slow connection), copy and paste the address into the address bar of your Web browser and then press Enter.

  3. When a download dialog box appears, save the file to the Windows desktop.
  4. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the prompts.

Original SCS Notification

To the SCS user community,

We have received the following Security alert concerning a current Email Virus that has broken out across campus.

A (modified for SCS) copy of this alert is included below. We will provide more information as it becomes available.

Subject: DEPT: Security Alert: Windows *Email Virus - Unnamed*

The campus has seen an outbreak of an as yet unnamed email virus. DO NOT open e-mails if they contain subject lines similar to these:

"Campus Life"

The suspicious message may have a faked From address of:


The message pretends to be about "including you in the new campus magazine in an article headed "Campus Life"." and has an attached zip file with a FAKE PDF file in it.

Symantec AntiVirus does NOT detect this virus at this time.

If you are in doubt about a message do not open it! Infected machines may be filtered from the SCS network to prevent spreading of this virus.
