What is LDAP?

OpenLDAP is the open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). It is a platform-independant protocol for updating and searching directories over the internet. Here in SCS, those directories contain real names, usernames and associated email addresses, mailboxes, etc. for all of the staff, students, faculty and others associated with the school, and OpenLDAP will be how we access those directories.
