Project 0 - The Vertigo Shot

All shots for this project were taken using a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT and a tripod, courtesy of the lovely Alyssa Reuter, who is featured in the second sequence.

A Lonely Penguin

This sequence was taken in the Baker/Porter hallway at night when there are fewer passerby. Since it is probably the longest hallway on campus, I thought it would make for a classic example of the vertigo shot.

The most difficult part of this sequence was making sure the penguin stayed the same size throughout all the shots. Because the penguin is so small compared to the rest of the scene, trying to measure it using the markers in the camera's viewfinder resulted in some inconsistent results.

The Stare-off

The Newell-Simon Atrium has rows of tables and chairs that stretch the entire length of the room, in addition to a large window that provides a nice backdrop and augments the vertigo effect.

Framing this sequence was much easier than the first. There are tiles on the floor at one end of the atrium, and the lines are perfectly parallel to the path I needed the camera to take for the sequence. In order to maintain as much consistency as I could between shots, I used a very specific measurement — I made sure the two left corners bottom box in the viewfinder matched up exactly with the two corners seen on the chair right behind the table in the foreground.
