Assignment 0: The Vertigo Shot
This assignment required me to duplicate a famous camera effect known as the dolly zoom using still photography shots. Using a series of several images as detailed below, animated gif files were create to display the final result.
These images were taken using a Nikon D40 with a standard NIKKOR 18-55mm f/2.5-5.6G ED II lens. The images were cropped to a resolution of 752x500 to reduce file size for the final animation.
The gif animation was created using the tools provided at http://www.makeagif.com/ with a frame length of 30ms and a resize resolution of 752x500.
The main issue that I experienced with this project, which can be realized below, is an inability to accurately center every picture around the same point. This causes the animation to stutter back and forth between several different center points. While the overall effect can still be seen, it is clear that the animation would have been much smoother and cleaner if every shot was centered properly.
Scenario 1: Near the Cut (CMU)
These images were taken of a spray painted ashtray in one of the smoking areas of Carnegie Mellon University. The key points to notice are the buildings in the background and how their shapes and sizes change relative to the foreground objects.

Scenario 2: Phipps Conservatory
The following images were taken in Phipps Conservatory on January 18, 2010. If one examines the animation carefully, the dolly effect almost makes it look as if the alien to the right is moving towards the left. Though the change in background in less pronounced due to the amount of objects in the image, following the aliens gives a clear example of how the dolly zoom effect works.
