For this project, I used my HP Photosmart R817 digital camera. According to its manual, the lens has a focal length range from 36 mm to 180 mm. All images were originally captured at a 2592x1936 resolution and reduced on the computer to a managable size for the web. One of the difficulties working with this camera for close-up shots was the fact that its normal auto-focus could only focus on objects further than 20 inches away, necessitating a switch to the macro focus mode.
This sequence was captured in the basement of the University Center, near the package pickup window. I noticed how the doorway provided an excellent frame for the room beyond, and decided it would work well with the dolly zoom effect. The two primary issues with this sequence were the slight difficulty in obtaining consistent lighting, and the fact that the display panels on the left wall creep into the last few frames of the sequence.
This sequence was captured in the Scotland Yard game room in the University Center. For this sequence, I kept the camera stationary and moved the pool ball away from it to create the effect. I also rotated the ball between shots to create the illusion of the ball rolling towards the pocket (though it looks like it will miss; I'm not that good at pool, it seems). The main difficulty here, as mentioned in the introduction, was acquiring focus on the ball for the early frames in the sequence, when it was very close to the camera.
