The goal of this assignment is to build a pinhole camera and take pictures with it. We used four different pinhole sizes: 0.1mm, 1mm, 3mm, and 5mm. Using the 0.1mm pinholes, the images we got are almost completely black, so we did not include any of them here. We used a Canon DSLR camera with 30 seconds of exposure time for all images (exposure time below 30 seconds produces unsatisfactory results.
Trying different hole sizes is actually testing the trade-off between sharpness and brightness. Bigger hole sizes allow more light to come in, but decrease the sharpness of the image; smaller hole sizes produce sharper but darker images. The problem we face is that we are not able to find a perfect balance because of the limitations of our set-up. Using a 5mm hole gives us blurry images, but any smaller holes does not allow enough light since our maximum exposure time is 30 seconds.
