Project #5 Building a Pinhole Camera

15-463: Computational Photography

Description

In this project, I need to design a pinhole camera, which is actually a dark box with a pinhole on one face, and a screen on the opposite face. The image on the screen can be recorded by a digital camera with long exposure time (usually 15~30 seconds).

Results

First design with Point Grey camera Flea3 FL3-U3-13E4C (longest exposure time: 1[s])

The results:

When the diameter of the pinhole is 0.8[mm]:

To make the result less noisy, more images may be needed. (Actually I am not sure about this statement.)

When the diameter of the pinhole is 2.5[mm]:

Pinhole video camera (diameter 2.5[mm]):

Design with a Sony camera (longest exposure time: 30[s])

The results:

0.1 mm diameter
0.8 mm diameter
2.5 mm diameter
The original scene of the last row:

The distance between the pinhole and the screen in my box is 450[mm], so the best pinhold size is 1.9*sqrt(450[mm] * 550[nm]) = 0.95[mm].
The middle column of the table above is captured when the pinhole size is of diameter 0.8[mm], which is near to the ideal size. The images look good.
In contrast, images in the first column are noisy because the ISO are set very high, and images in the third column are blurry because the pinhole size is much bigger than the ideal size.

The other captured scenes with 0.8[mm] diameter:

I finished the homework before the deadline.
This website is updated by Nov. 7. A video captured by a pinhole camera is added, just for fun.
