Introduction

The main component of this project was a basic implementation (in MATLAB) of the "Tour Into The Picture" ("TIP") technique described by Horry et. al. (1997). Briefly, this technique involves the approximation of certain kinds of perspective scene with a five-sided box. Portions of the image which correspond to the walls of the box are then rectified (as demonstrated in the previous project) and subsequently texture-mapped onto the 3D box model.

Examples

Below are three images which approximately conform to the assumptions of the TIP model. At left is the original image with the user-selected "rear wall" and vanishing point marked. At center and right are two novel views of the scene synthesized from the single image at left by using the TIP algorithm.

"Bells & Whistles" - Movie Fly-Through

The 3D model produced by the TIP algorithm perfectly lends itself to video fly-throughs; one generated for the tunnel image may be seen below. (If you don't have Adobe Flash Player, you may download an MPEG-4 file suitable for VLC, QuickTime, and the like here.)
