Project 0: Vertigo

The camera I used for this project was the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3. My first subject was a door in the hallway of Morewood Gardens. The images range from a zoomed-out view of a close subject to a zoomed-in view of a distant subject. I tried to maintain the door at a constant size.

Below is an animation of all the above images put together. Since I zoom in as the animation progresses, perspective turns from strong to weak, and the distance to the door appears to shrink.

My second subject was a stack of two orange crates outside of Newell-Simon Hall. Again, the images range from a zoomed-out view of a close subject to a zoomed-in view of a distant subject. I tried to maintain the crates at a constant size.

Below is an animation of all the above images put together. Since I zoom in as the animation progresses, perspective turns from strong to weak, and the background seems to loom larger and larger.

My main difficulty with this project was finding a subject with surroundings that would make a perspective change obvious. The hallway worked well because of the many lines and edges going into the picture; a lone subject sitting on a desk did not work as well, since the background showed very subtle changes. It seems best when there are enough clues in both the background and the foreground so that the changes in relative size are apparent.
