info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Some questions by Andrew novice
I recently installed the ATK on our Sun network and like it a lot. I
have a couple of questions that I couldn't answer by looking at the FAQ
or the documentation:
Is it possible to read usenet news remotely via NNTP using messages? Is
it possible to access AFS bboard and help files remotely in messages
without running AFS locally? Can I make the messages program annotate
mail messages that I replied to or forwarded, like in MH? Is there a way
to specify something like "alternate mailboxes" in MH? In other words,
messages sent to me@machine1, me@machine2, ..., should all show up as
addressed to me. This might be related to the fact that I had to
compile with RESOLVER_ENV undefined due to a problem with the header
files in SunOS 4.1.3.
How can I make the keyboard shortcuts show in up in the the menus like
in the remote demo? How about making the menus 3d? Where is the undo
function in ez? Is there a smart spaces feature in ez that ignores
typing more than one space between words?
For some reason, shell commands are invisible in typescript and show up
after hitting return? This makes tcsh command-line editing impossible.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Regards, -Konstantin

If you have a machine which has access to the directories where the
bboards are stored you should be able to set it up to run a
messageserver process. The help files must be available through the
filesystem either on the local disk or some NFS or AFS filesystem.

There is no way to configure how excerpts are done, though the ATK
extension language Ness could be used to do just about anything with the
excerpts. (I've never used MH so I don't know just what you're looking
for here.)

As far as I know messages doesn't munge the to: header, it just looks
the way it was when the message was sent...

*.MenusShowKeys: yes *.MotifPopupMenus: yes
MenusShowKeys is yes by default though... Which release do you have?

There is none. (It's been on the wish list for quite awhile, but there
have been higher priority issues.)

Again, it should be possible to program this fairly easily in Ness.

Try turning off command line editing in your shell, typescript provides
command line editing and with fcomp can also provide completion. (Though
not command completion, it does do history completion and file
completion, but being separate from the shell you must add some aliases
to tell typescript about the shell's current woring directory.)
Typescript is not a terminal emulator, just a command line interface to
the shell. You may be happier with tm(an h19 emulator) in contrib/tm.

I should have noted that the TERM variable will be set to wm in a shell
executing in a typescript.

Subject: question about andrew
Hi, I am trying to build Andrew from the MIT X11 Release 5
distribution. Is there a source for formatted documentation? The .doc
files look like TeX, but the Makefiles don't seem to do anything with
them to format them (although I have TeX and the LaTeX macros on the
system). I am also having a problem compiling C source files that do
#include <afs/...> The problem occurs because I don't have AFS. Is there
a clean way that I can prevent the compilation of these files which
depend upon AFS? (I am stuck on overhead/util/lib/alquery.c because it
wants afs/acl.h afs/prclient.h afs/prerror.h afs/venus.h
afs/cellconfig.h afs/print.h afs/prs_fs.h

I'm fairly sure that you can't. In order to prevent losing data in case
writing the file fails the new file is written as filename.NEW and then
moved over the old file. If you would like to make this behavior
optional you can look at atk/support/buffer.c (or bufferlist.c I forget
which). (and write over the file directly when
environ_GetProfileSwitch("TakeRisksSavingFiles", FALSE) is true. That
string does not occur in the file, I'm suggesting that it be added.)
Ideally I suppose buffer, bufferlist and frame would be modified so that
if creating filename.NEW failed they would put up a dialog asking the
user whether to take the risk of saving the file directly over the old
copy.
The best course is probably to copy the file somewhere you do have
search permission and edit it there, mv'ing it into the non-searchable
directory when you're done.

The .doc files are in ATK format. Once you have the system up and
running they can be converted to troff. (And from there to postscipt
using groff, Adobe's Transcript, or psroff if you have the old CAT
troff. See the FAQ document in the top level of the distribution.)
Be sure you don't #define AFS_ENV in your site.h file. If you do,
remove it and add #undef AFS_ENV. If AFS_ENV is not set in your site.h
file, double check that the #defineAFS_ENV 1 in allsys.h is commented
out.

I'm interested in more information on the Andrew File System (AFS)..
	- what systems is AFS currently available on - what may be
involved in porting and supporting it to a unix-based system,
	- is it available on any MPP platforms
	- What are AFS's advantages over NFS
Thank you for your response.

I am trying to create an application with adew and ness. It seems that

Hi.
I am new to the world of Andrew, and I am using the arbcon to create a
simple application using an lset, buttons and a label. I have a couple
of questions:
1. runadew allows me to run the application without all the ez extras.
Is there any way I can run the application as a "true" stand alone
application?
2. This question is related to 1. I do not wish the user to be able to
modify the interface while it is running (i.e. moving lset "splits").
Can this be disabled, or should I be using another method to lay out the
interface?
3. Is there an undo command?
Thanking you in advance.

Please help:
There is a problem with sending mails from EUNet in Austria to .ca
domain (Canada). Ping, finger etc. work OK, but unfortunately mails go
to Austrian company CA rather than to Canada.
A workaround for mailing has been: @eunet.co.at:user@host.domain.ca
Unfortunately my sendmessage does not accept such kind of addressing
("Sendmessage validation failed"). Is there a way to enable it ?
I'm running ATK 5.0.0 without AFS and without AMDS, under SunOS 4.1.3.

Hello,
I am trying to compile Andrew 5.1 on an HP 9000 715/50, running HP-UX
9.01. I have already built the entire X11R5, pl25 distribution on my
system.
Included below are the output of "gnumake World", site.h and site.mcr
Is there some patch that is needed? I have built this before on a
DECsystem 5000/200, Ultrix 4.2 without much difficulty. Now, I can't get
the Makefiles built.
Thanks in advance. -- Eric M. Boehm GE DSO

Well, yes, if you use only those fonts, but I happen to use
lucidasans12, lucidasans12b, lucidasans12i, lucidasans12bi,
lucidasans12f, lucidasans12bf, etc. Of course, these are just aliases:
the fixed-width lucida fonts are really *-lucidasanstypewriter-*.

I was wondering if there is some way to specify that the runadew window
cannot be resized (or that my application window inside runadew cannot
be resized)
I want to be able to specify this in my application code (i.e. like one
can in Motif using XtSetArg and XtSetValues).
Can anyone please enlighten me! :)
Thanks

sparc sunos 4.1.3
The andrew-make on a sparc sunos 4.1.3 is a hell:
i found out that CC = gcc -traditional helps a lot
but:
1. the Makefile in andrew/atk/basics/common goes wrong, it forgets to
produce the object files for shared libs.
2. libutil.a and some others will not be installed (doing it with make
Install in the right directories helps a little )
3. doindex for making shareable modules dumps core.
do i have the wrong make? Did the make go more easy under Linux?

You could copy default.template to a privatedirectory on your
atktemplatepath list (in prefernces). Then use the style editor to
modify it to change the interline spacing.
Beware. The above will also change the interline spacing on paper.

I am writing a small application with a couple of buttons embedded in an
lset. I want to be able to click on one of the buttons and have a label
change on one of the other buttons, but am having trouble. I am trying
to use value_SetString but am having problems accessing the correct
field to change.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank you in anticipation :)

I have a html/htmlview object based on text. This works on HTML (not
HTML+), and is fairly stable: we use it to write all of our web
documents here (see "http://web.cs.city.ac.uk/"). I'm going to tidy up
the internals of the code and fix some of the bugs over the weekend, so
I'll release an alpha/beta copy for people to play with on Monday.
