Oddly, the error message seems to imply that your version of andrew was
compiled with RUN_AMDS_ENV defined in config/site.mcr, even though your're not
running AMDS.

In any event, the error message suggests that \italic{sendmessage} expects to
find your system's regular sendmail program (/usr/lib/sendmail, for SunOS) in
a file named /etc/oldsendmail, and presumably, this file was somehow removed
from your system directory.

To fix the problem, copy or link /usr/lib/sendmail to /etc/oldsendmail, or
define \italic{OldSendmailProgram }in your AndrewSetup file to be\italic{
/usr/lib/sendmail.  }(And make sure /usr/lib/sendmail exists!).\italic{

Subject: Some questions by Andrew novice

I recently installed the ATK on our Sun network and like it a lot. I
have a couple of questions that I couldn't answer by looking at the FAQ
or the documentation:

Is it possible to read usenet news remotely via NNTP using messages?
Is it possible to access AFS bboard and help files remotely in messages
without running AFS locally?
Can I make the messages program annotate mail messages that I replied to
or forwarded, like in MH?
Is there a way to specify something like "alternate mailboxes" in MH?
In other words, messages sent to me@machine1, me@machine2, ..., should
all show up as addressed to me. This might be related to the fact that
I had to compile with RESOLVER_ENV undefined due to a problem with the
header files in SunOS 4.1.3.

How can I make the keyboard shortcuts show in up in the the menus like
in the remote demo? How about making the menus 3d?
Where is the undo function in ez?
Is there a smart spaces feature in ez that ignores typing more than one
space between words?

For some reason, shell commands are invisible in typescript and show up
after hitting return? This makes tcsh command-line editing impossible.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Regards,

No.

If you have a machine which has access to the directories where the
bboards are stored you should be able to set it up to run a
messageserver process. The help files must be available through the
filesystem either on the local disk or some NFS or AFS filesystem.

There is no way to configure how excerpts are done, though the ATK
extension language Ness could be used to do just about anything with the
excerpts. (I've never used MH so I don't know just what you're looking
for here.)

As far as I know messages doesn't munge the to: header, it just looks
the way it was when the message was sent...

*.MenusShowKeys: yes
*.MotifPopupMenus: yes

MenusShowKeys is yes by default though... Which release do you have?

Again, it should be possible to program this fairly easily in Ness.

Try turning off command line editing in your shell, typescript provides
command line editing and with fcomp can also provide completion. (Though
not command completion, it does do history completion and file
completion, but being separate from the shell you must add some aliases
to tell typescript about the shell's current woring directory.)
Typescript is not a terminal emulator, just a command line interface to
the shell. You may be happier with tm(an h19 emulator) in contrib/tm.

I should have noted that the TERM variable will be set to wm in a shell
executing in a typescript.

Every time I have demo'd ATK applications (specifically messages and ez) to
people, the response has been "Looks very nice, but I don't want to use it if
I can't undo. Even 'vi' can undo....". I feel that until undo is moved higher
on the priority list and actually implemented, the user-base of ez and ATK in
general will be very limited. Even if it is kludged in to work for only the
text object. That's all people want it for in general. At our site, text
undo capability would double the number of users immediately (okay, okay, so
we don't have many users to start with :-).

Yes. A fellow at Evans & Sutherland did a port a few months back but he

Subject: ez and search permissions

I'm trying to have ez saving a file which has the correct write permissions
but belong to a directory which has not search permissions.
How can I avoid this problem?

Subject: question about andrew

Hi,
   I am trying to build Andrew from the MIT X11 Release 5 distribution.
Is there a source for formatted documentation? The .doc files look like
TeX, but the Makefiles don't seem to do anything with them to format
them (although I have TeX and the LaTeX macros on the system). I am also
having a problem compiling C source files that do
#include <afs/...>
The problem occurs because I don't have AFS. Is there a clean way that
I can prevent the compilation of these files which depend upon AFS?
(I am stuck on overhead/util/lib/alquery.c because it wants
afs/acl.h
afs/prclient.h
afs/prerror.h
afs/venus.h
afs/cellconfig.h
afs/print.h
afs/prs_fs.h

						Thanks,

I'm fairly sure that you can't. In order to prevent losing data in case
writing the file fails the new file is written as filename.NEW and then
moved over the old file. If you would like to make this behavior
optional you can look at atk/support/buffer.c (or bufferlist.c I forget
which). (and write over the file directly when
environ_GetProfileSwitch("TakeRisksSavingFiles", FALSE)  is true.  That
string does not occur in the file, I'm suggesting that it be added.)
Ideally I suppose buffer, bufferlist and frame would be modified so that
if creating filename.NEW failed they would put up a dialog asking the
user whether to take the risk of saving the file directly over the old
copy.

The best course is probably to copy the file somewhere you do have
search permission and edit it there, mv'ing it into the non-searchable
directory when you're done.

The .doc files are in ATK format. Once you have the system up and
running they can be converted to troff. (And from there to postscipt
using groff, Adobe's Transcript, or psroff if you have the old CAT
troff. See the FAQ document in the top level of the distribution.)

Be sure you don't #define AFS_ENV in your site.h file. If you do,
remove it and add #undef AFS_ENV. If AFS_ENV is not set in your site.h
file, double check that the #defineAFS_ENV 1 in allsys.h is commented
out.

I'm interested in more information on the
Andrew File System (AFS)..

	- what systems is AFS currently available

	- what may be involved in porting and
	  supporting it to a unix-based system,

	- is it available on any MPP platforms

	- What are AFS's advantages over NFS

I know of two ports to the 386 currently happening and three that are in
our current release. A Linux port has been done and is apparently being
put up for anon-ftp on sunsite by Michael O'Reilly
 <oreillym@tartarus.uwa.edu.au>.

A port to 386BSD is mostly done but not enough to make binaries available
yet. That work is being done by Cary Petterborg
<cpetterb@javelin.sim.es.com>

In our current release there is some support for SCOUnix, i386_mach, and
i386_aix. Apparently the SCO environment is somewhat in flux so our
current sources won't build without some work and we've put no effort into
rectifying that situation.

You can't just take any i386 binaries and expect them to work. It's highly
dependent on the particular OS. Of those ports that are done or underway,
the Linux port is most SYSV-ish.

any way I can run the application as a "true" stand alone application?

2. This question is related to 1. I do not wish the user to be able to modify
the interface while it is running (i.e. moving lset "splits"). Can this be
disabled, or should I be using another method to lay out the interface?

3. Is there an undo command?

Thanking you in advance.

The "Create Controller" option on the "ADEW" menu card of the arbcon will
produce C code which can be compiled to make an application.

The lset class is derived from the lpair class. Therefore therefore the
boundary lines can be made immovable with lset_SetMovable(ls, FALSE), where
ll is the lset parent. (For a complex image with many splittings, each
lset would have to have this call made on it.)

Not at the present time.

I find very practical writing c code using the ez editor.
But what about direct line number referencing (like :<line no> in vi)?
This is mandatory when getting error messages from the c compiler
(it still can happen ...).
Thank you

The built-in keybindings of '<esc>-n' and '<esc>-N' (where '<esc>' may be
either the 'Escape' key, and/or the 'Alt' key (and possibly even the 'Meta'
key?) - are made for this:

'<esc>-n' => textview-goto-paragraph	(prompts for "paragraph" number in
message-line at bottom of window)

'<esc>-N' =>> textview-what-paragraph	(displays current "paragraph" number
in message-line at bottom of window)

"paragraph" - a line of text ended by an explicit new-line (as opposed to a
purely visual one due to wrapping)

<esc> n prompts for the line number to go to (actually it prompts for a
paragraph number, but it is really the same in ez. The code counts newlines).

<esc>N will report the current line/paragraph number.

Subject: Sendmessage validation failed

Please help:

There is a problem with sending mails from EUNet in Austria to .ca
domain (Canada). Ping, finger etc. work OK, but unfortunately mails go
to Austrian company CA rather than to Canada.

A workaround for mailing has been:
	@eunet.co.at:user@host.domain.ca

Unfortunately my sendmessage does not accept such kind of addressing
("Sendmessage validation failed"). Is there a way to enable it ?

I'm running ATK 5.0.0 without AFS and without AMDS, under SunOS 4.1.3.

Hello,

I am trying to compile Andrew 5.1 on an HP 9000 715/50, running HP-UX 9.01.
I have already built the entire X11R5, pl25 distribution on my system.

Included below are the output of "gnumake World", site.h and site.mcr

Is there some patch that is needed? I have built this before on a DECsystem
5000/200, Ultrix 4.2 without much difficulty. Now, I can't get the Makefiles
built.

Thanks in advance.

What does that line look like in the Makefile?

On a broader note, with HPUX9.01 the Andrew dynamic loading breaks. We
have a work-around but it's not a simple patch and it won't be available
until X11R6. Sorry for the bad news.

There was no way to do this. I have now modified launchapplication so that
if the text argument contains a single object (and the marker passed to
launchapplication refers to the entire base text), then the object will be
displayed without surrounding text.

}\quotation{	@eunet.co.at:user@host.domain.ca

}
\quotation{Unfortunately my sendmessage does not accept such kind of

}\quotation{("Sendmessage validation failed"). Is there a way to enable it ?

}
Sure--rewrite it as an RFC-822 route-address, complete with angle-brackets:

	<@eunet.co.at:user@host.domain.ca>

The validation fails because of the syntax error in what it needs to be an
RFC-822 address. This still isn't 100% RFC-822 conformant (because it omits
having a word outside the angle-brackets, but it will get by the parser fine.
 Not only that, but that omission is OK by RFC-1123.

I agree. ATK does not \italic{require} an extension language to be useful.
 It is a nice addition, though, and so it should be packaged as such. It
will probably be very difficult deciding exactly which insets/extensions
should belong in ATK Lite. We need to walk a fine line between keeping it
small, keeping it interesting, and keeping it stable.

Has anyone else noticed that the font used in \bold{figure} (for text
items) is drawn on the screen 2 points bigger than what you've selected?

This is especially disconcerting when you go to \bold{\italic{print}} it,
and the printer DOES use the font size you'd selected

\smaller{Yes, I know the difference between WYSIWYG and WYSLRN, that's not
the issue here. Forget about printing for now. My point is that when I
select "Text", and the "andysans" family, and a font size of "8", I am
clearly getting andysans\bold{\bigger{10}} displayed on the screen! When I
ask for a font size of "10", andysans\bold{\bigger{12}} gets displayed on
the screen! \bold{The 'Sample' displayed in the toolset DOES NOT MATCH
what gets displayed in the figure itself!!!}

I poked around in the code a bit, and couldn't find anything that would
explain this unusual behavior. Any ideas???

}Hmm. This magic factor of +2 reminds me of this code in
xfontdesc_LoadXFont:

\typewriter{\smaller{        if (strncmp(andyfamily, "andy", 4) == 0) \{

            \bold{\italic{fudge = 2};}

            if (andyfamily[4] == '\\0') \{

                xfamily = "times";

            \}

            else if (strcmp(andyfamily+4, "sans") == 0) \{

                xfamily = "helvetica";

            \}

            else if (strcmp(andyfamily+4, "type") == 0) \{

                xfamily = "courier";

            \}

            else if (strcmp(andyfamily+4, "symbol") == 0) \{

                xfamily = "symbol";

            \}

            else \{

                xfamily = andyfamily;

                \bold{fudge = 0;}

            \}

        \}

        else \{

            xfamily = andyfamily;

            \bold{fudge = 0};

        \}

		...

        sprintf(xstyleName, "-*-%s-%s-%s-*-*-*-%d-*-*-%s-*-*-*", xfamily,
weight, slant, 10 * (\bold{\italic{desiredSize + fudge}}), spacing);

}}
I'll confess that I wrote this code, but the fudge factor is far older that
this version of the code. I haven't tried to analyze what figure is doing,
but wanted to make sure everyone was aware of this +2 business in xfontd.c.
(This was done in the wm days to try to get the on-screen font appearance
to better correspond to the printed appearance, on the ITC's 90dpi displays
with 75dpi fonts. I kept it so that existing documents wouldn't suddenly
change in strange ways. Sigh.)

How about if you ask for helvetica8 and helvetica10. Do they work any
better? This fudge factor only applies to andy-ish font names.

Speaking of fonts...

I've been thinking that it's about time we started using xlfd (X Logical
Font Description) font names. Certainly the old style names will have to
be supported, but the new style should be preferred. The XLFD seems
reasonable for even non-X fonts as far as I have seen. The main work would
involve updating fontdesc_ExplodeFontName to understand XLFD names in
addition to the "Andrew conventions."

Does anyone have any comments or objections?

Thanks for any info,

-Rob Ryan

Subject: Info Gathering-for High School Teachers

	I am attempting to gather information on Multimedia technics, ie teleconferencing, jpeg, mpeg, gif, etc... that would enhance a learning environment for

This is only superficially related, but could the FixedWidth style
attribute just Go Away? All it does is confuse people. Quite a few people
get the impression that it will actually make the font fixed-width, but all
it \italic{really} does it put an ``f'' at the end of the font name
requested from X. But there IS no "andy12f" or "andysans12f" font...

when you ask for "andy15f" and get "rom17", which means bold and italic

}
The only way to get a fixed-width font is to set the family to "andytype";
why not just make that fact obvious by removing the red herring?

Interesting idea, but \bold{figure} is hardcoded to only give you the

Hmm, looking at that algorithm in \italic{xfontd.c} makes me wonder ``So

Well, yes, if you use only those fonts, but I happen to use
lucidasans12, lucidasans12b, lucidasans12i, lucidasans12bi,
lucidasans12f, lucidasans12bf, etc. Of course, these are just aliases:
the fixed-width lucida fonts are really *-lucidasanstypewriter-*.

I was wondering if there is some way to specify that the runadew window cannot
be resized (or that my application window inside runadew cannot be resized)

I want to be able to specify this in my application code (i.e. like
one can in Motif using XtSetArg and XtSetValues).

Can anyone please enlighten me! :)

would involve updating fontdesc_ExplodeFontName to understand XLFD names in
addition to the "Andrew conventions."

}
Yes, this is a very good idea. However, I doubt that any users will want
to specify fonts in the ugly XLFD format. It would be nice if the Andrew
font naming convention would still be supported (of course that's needed
for compatibility, too). The Andrew style name would be parsed directly
into the XLFD format. The fontname parser would also allow literal XLFD
names, too. For example courier12b would map to
-*-courier-bold-*-*-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-*. Let the X server figure out what
to do with that.

The andrew naming convention could be extended to allow some of the other
attributes to be specified as well without requiring the user to use the
ugly XLFD names. For example adobe:courier12b could represent
-adobe-courier-bold-*-*-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-*.

}
Actually, I think the fixed width attribute is a good idea. The problem
seems to be that font foundries do not consider it to be an attribute of
fonts (warning: I'm no font expert!). Let me rephrase that: the
proportional/monospaced is considered an attribute, but the font foundaries
do not typically ship a given font in both formats. Instead, they ship two
fonts. For example, there exist two fonts named "lucida" and
"lucidatypewriter". I personally think that there should be one font,
"lucida," that comes in both proportional and monospaced forms:

	-*-lucida-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-p-*-*-*

	-*-lucida-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-m-*-*-*

But that is not the case. Could ATK's new fontname parser solve this
problem? Could it solve this problem without requiring a zillion X font
aliases? For the above example we would need some rule that maps
lucida/monospaced to lucidatypewriter/proportional. I also think we need
other font substitution rules. For example a rule that says "if you can't
find a family called Andy, try Times Roman instead," would be extremely
useful. Pull these rules out into a font rules file if you can. Also,
each font needs a rule to map it to a printer font....

\quotation{I believe versions 3 and earlier work OK.

	I can confirm that version 3 works OK; we've been testing it here for several
months now, and I've never had any problems.

	Andrew could be smarter about contractions in the text stream it passes to
ispell, though. If I spell-check the word \italic{shouldn't}, Andrew gives
the two separate words \italic{shouldn} and \italic{t} to ispell, which then
(correctly) thinks the word \italic{shouldn} is misspelled. I'm not sure
about ispell version 2 or 4, but ispell version 3 is aware of virtually all
contractions and will "do the right thing." So at least for version 3, Andrew
should consider\typewriter{\smaller{\bold{ [A-Za-z]+'[A-Za-z]+ }}}as just one
word.

James

Note, if you're not concerned with the internal working of the toolkit
you'll probably want to skip this message.

Currently the mechanism for cleaning up when destroying a window is
problematic in some situations. In particular a core leak occurs if a view
tree containing one or more lpairs is under the im, and the other views are
destroyed after the im. The real nitty-gritty is that lpair does an
UnlinkTree call on each of it's children, which causes a LinkTree to be
propagated to their children. This causes the sub views' graphics to be
inserted into their parents' graphics. In the process an "UpdateBlock" is
searched for or created for the X window. If the im is destroyed after the
view this is no problem, but if the im has already been destroyed the
"UpdateBlock" will be leaked.

The specific instance which prompted this post was the printer options
dialog box. (popts in contrib/mit/util)

Solutions:

1. Always destroy a window with a sequence like:

im_SetView(im, NULL);

/* code to destroy all the views goes here*/

im_Destroy(im);

2. Disallow UnlinkTree or LinkTree calls in the FinalizeObject methods of
subclasses of view. (This would leave dangling pointers from some views to
their now deceased parent.) Also, unless care is exercised to always call
UnlinkTree before destroying the view any code interested in when a view is
linked in or out will have to watch for the destruction. It could be
difficult to locate all of these calls since some calls may not be directly
in FinalizeObject, but in another function called by FinalizeObject.

3. Remove the view_UnLinkTree call from the xim_FinalizeObject method.
 Once again code interested in when a view is linked in or out, would have
to watch for the destruction. Then the sequence to delete a window would
be:

/* code to destroy all the views goes here*/

im_Destroy(im)

4. Add reference counting to the UpdateBlocks and other per window/display
structures in xgraphic, so that when all the views referencing a block are
destroyed the block will be freed.

I personally favor 1 or 3. (Since they yield the least change needed in
the toolkit...)

Any comments?

Thanks,

-Rob Ryan

Here it is. The difference between version 2.x and 3.x is that the banner

 Our current, unreleased, code can deal with this.

I was just poking around in the \bold{bind} class, and it occurred to me:

How come the "mask" is for the \italic{menu}, instead of \italic{the proc
itself}?

Think about it. If a user binds their own menu to "textview-zap-region",
that menu appears \italic{all the time} \smaller{(because they couldn't
specify a mask on the "addmenu" line, but that's another topic)}. If the
mask were associated \italic{with the proc itself}, the custom menu item
wouldn't show up if there were nothing to cut.

Need more examples? Custom "Paste" menus, filter procs, and inset
insertion menus that show up even when the buffer is readonly. At this
site, we bind a "Window" and "Buffer" card in global.ezinit, with items
like "New Window" and "List Buffers" on them. These annoying little
puppies show up even in frames where frame commands have been
\italic{disabled}.  etc etc

Just thinking out loud...

Subject: imake hell on sparc sunos 4.1.3

The andrew-make on a sparc sunos 4.1.3 is a hell:

i found out that CC = gcc -traditional helps a lot

but:

1. the Makefile in andrew/atk/basics/common goes wrong,
   it forgets to produce the object files for shared libs.

2. libutil.a and some others will not be installed (doing it with make Install
   in the right directories helps a little )

3. doindex for making shareable modules dumps core.

do i have the wrong make? Did the make go more easy under Linux?

You could copy default.template to a privatedirectory on your
atktemplatepath list (in prefernces). Then use the style editor to
modify it to change the interline spacing.

Beware. The above will also change the interline spacing on paper.

From: Stuart Watt <watt@cs.flinders.edu.au>

I am writing a small application with a couple of buttons embedded in an lset.
I want to be able to click on one of the buttons and have a label change on one
of the other buttons, but am having trouble. I am trying to use value_SetString
but am having problems accessing the correct field to change.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you in anticipation :)

I have a html/htmlview object based on text. This works on HTML (not
HTML+), and is fairly stable: we use it to write all of our web
documents here (see "http://web.cs.city.ac.uk/"). I'm going to tidy up
the internals of the code and fix some of the bugs over the weekend, so
I'll release an alpha/beta copy for people to play with on Monday.

What you need to do is change the "label" attribute of the cel that contains
the value. An explanation, including an example that does exactly what you
want, can be found in the Adew reference manual
($ANDREWDIR/doc/adew/RefMan.doc) . Look at section 7.2 entitled "Dynamically
changing valueview attributes ".

\quotation{Then use the style editor to

}\quotation{modify it to change the interline spacing.

}
(And don't forget to change the "\bold{paragraph} spacing", too; "line
spacing" only affects the wrapped parts of lines.)

These \underline{already} default to zero, though, so you'd have to make
them \italic{negative} to further reduce the vertical spacing. This can
have some pretty ugly effects if you get carried away.

Basically, blame your installed fonts. With the default settings of zero,
the textview goes by the bounding box defined by the font itself. If you
don't like what happens when you use \italic{negative} line/para-spacing
values, your alternative is to find some fonts defined with closer
tolerances.

\smaller{(The lucidasanstypewriter <lut> family is awesome for source code
and typescripts. The usual "non-andy-font caveats" apply <it can't find
bold and italic equivalents because of different naming conventions> so I
don't recommend it for general use with messages, or *.BodyFont, but it's
great in a few select templates. Check it out if you've got it at your
site.)}

We're still having problems reducing the default inter-line spacing in Andrew
5.1. Editing the default style with the style editor as suggested below only
seems to allow you to increase the spacing (inter-line spacing 0 is the
current wide spacing). Setting the spacing to negative values only makes the
text disappear. Perhaps this is a font problem? When we went a new version
of Andrew a few revisions back, the fonts all changed and this problem came
up.

Any clues?

Thanks,

Sigh. I should test everything before I send it out. Right at the moment
I cannot even edit the inter-line spacing because of an error in our
in-house version of AUIS.

The basic problem of interline spacing arises from the fonts you are now
using. If you use our standard distribution, you are probably now using
the X11 fonts, even though we still ship the Andrew fonts with the rest of
the source. The X11 fonts have large heights because of a few ascenders or
descenders. If you switch back to the AUIS fonts, the problem should
disappear again. You could make the change by some combination of 'xset fp
...' commands.

If you really want to work at this problem, you can probably edit the bdf
form of the X11 fonts to change the default interline spacing. Here is a
semi-typical bdffont heading:

SIZE 10 78 78

FONTBOUNDINGBOX 67 109 -17 -89

STARTPROPERTIES 13

Ownership "  "

FONT_ASCENT         20

FONT_DESCENT         89

DEFAULT_CHAR         48

DEFAULT_WIDTH          0

DEFAULT_HEIGHT          0

DEFAULT_X          0

DEFAULT_Y          0

DEFAULT_DX          0

DEFAULT_DY          0

Presumably you would change the values for the some combination of the
properties  FONTBOUNDINGBOX,  FONT_ASCENT,  FONT_DESCENT,  DEFAULT_HEIGHT,
 DEFAULT_Y,  DEFAULT_DY.

It may be easier to live with white-space.
