I installed auis62L0-wp.tgz (I am not sure what to do with auis62L0.lsm)
and am very interested in getting familiar with ez. In spite of printing
out a large number of 'help' files much of the basic info is not spelled
out. It took me several days to discover that the font menus are not
availble unless the current file has the '.doc' extension. I still have
not found out what the PF keys and alt- ctrl- and esc combinations do.
Is thee a reference card somewhere? I am running it on Linux. Your help
will be appreciated. Don

"\bold{help ez-keys}" will tell you most of the significant defaults. I
don't think the PF keys have any default bindings. You can bind them to
whatever blows your hair back, though; see "\bold{help initfiles}".

\smaller{Note that when binding a PF key, you can't just reference it
\italic{by name}.  Presumably [I wasn't there] this was for
cross-hardware-platform compatibility or something. PF1 on an RS/6000 is
equivalent to typing Esc-captialS, for example. So, to make PF1 do a
"Copy", you bind ``\\eS'' like so, in your \italic{~/.ezinit}:

I want to take a given set of mail (from a user, to a user for example) and
toss it (file to /dev/null).

How can I do this in FLAMES?

Your top-level mail-handling function should return non-NIL without
actually filing the message anywhere. When that function returns
non-NIL, AMS figures that the function succeeded in whatever it was
trying to do, and merrily deletes the message from the Mailbox.

For this reason, you should also take pains to ensure that the function
DOES return NIL when it fails.

This is an announcement. It tells you in rather cryptic form how to
install and then points you to the README:

\quotation{Comment1     =Installation instructions as ROOT:

Comment2     =   cd /

Comment3     =   tar xzf [path]/auis62L?-src.tgz

Comment4     =   Read /usr/andrew/README

}
The lastest version (L2) has notes on the tailoring of the FKeys. But you
are correct about a pointer telling you what extension to use. My apologies
for that. I will change it in the next version. The key stroke
combinations are shown on the menus (for those cases where menu items are
bound to a keystroke). The default F-key are described in the latest
version of README:

\bold{KEY BINDINGS}

As part of the customization provided for you, I have defined a number of
F-key bindings to make word processing a bit easier:

\indent{F1	Copy	(After selecting an area, copy it)

F2	Paste	(Put copied data at cursor)

F3	Cut	(Remove selected data)

F4	Cycle-Copy-Buffer	(AUIS remembers previous copied data)

F5	Show selected text in an \italic{italics} font

F6	Show selected text in a \bold{bold} font

F7	Plainer selected area (Remove one level of styles)

F8	Plainest selected area (Remove all levels of styles)}

Subject: Tabs and the left margin?

It seems there is a change in the default behaviour in the latest
version of AUIS (I suppose that's the whole point of new versions, after
all :)

Previously, a tab found to the left of the left margin would move the
insertion point to the left margin. Nowadays, this is all ifdef'd
around MEASURE_TABS_FROM_LM. So all of those documents/objects written
with the idea that a tab will take you to the left margin are now
broken. Admittedly, the "tab-to-lm" functionality may have been a
slight hack, in that it's entire purpose in life was to provide the
facility for producing bulleted lists and the like. However, without
this functionality, I don't see how you can do a nicely lined up list
with both bullets and text lined up.

Any particular reason for the change in default behaviour? Is there a
better way of doing lists?

Of late I have been receiving many messages on the info-andrew mailing list
which obviously contain BE2 stuff but the Content-Type field says it is
text/plain. Consequently AMS displays all the BE2 crud thus obliging me to
sort through all the BE2 crud to figure out what the real message is. I think
something is broken somewhere, and I will leave it to the exprets to figure
out what is broken.

Shouldn'a the Content-Type header field of a message that contains BE2 say
something like "X-BE2..." instead of "text/plain"?

The last message on which I noticed this was in the message from Susan Straub
posted a few days back.

Thanks.

}
Sigh. This was announced in the December 1993 newsletter with the
following cryptic comment:

\quotation{\bold{
}\bold{Tab} stops are now measured from the beginning of each line, instead
of the left margin. Justification/discussion available upon request. \

}
The "justification" that came with the patch is this:

\leftindent{Here's a patch to make tab stops be measured from the beginning
of each line, instead of the left margin. \

Probably, somebody thought it would be important that the tabs were still
in the same place on the wrapped portion of the line. My response is, "who
cares?". If the line got wrapped, all the stuff they were trying to line
up, using tabs, is trash ANYWAY... \

Why I think the tab stops OUGHT TO BE measured from the beginning of the
line, and NOT the left margin: For C code, you want to change the amount by
which wrapped lines are indented. Try it :-(. If your code has been
indented using tab characters, those lines get jerked around strangely if
you use any LeftMargin or Indent values other than those given by default.
 They look just fine AFTER the above patch is applied. You want some text,
in paragraphs that wrap nicely, and you want it indented. You want a
couple columns of simple values down the left side, one row per paragraph.
It seems pretty intuitive, right? You just set the LeftMargin IN an inch,
set the paragraph Indent back OUT an inch, and line those two columns up
using 1/2-inch tab stops. WRONG! But it does work exactly that way AFTER
the above patch has been applied. \

Judging by the code that the above patch #ifdef's out, somebody went to a
lot of trouble to make tab stops be measured from the LeftMargin. I'd like
to know why, or any other insights or different viewpoints anyone has to
offer.}

Apparently we need two forms of tab behavior, one for C code and one for
bulleted lists.

In the meantime, sites with documents that have the old tab behavior are
well advised to have

	#define MEASURE_TABS_FROM_LM  1

in their site.h file.

}\quotation{with both bullets and text lined up.

}
In the style definition of whatever style you're using for the list
(something like **description**), just remove the first few tab stops, so
the first tab will take you to the left margin.

If your paragraph indent is -1.75" from the left margin, make sure your
first tab stop in the relevant style is at 1.75", and you're back in
business.

\quotation{Any particular reason for the change in default behaviour?

}
I was the arm-twister behind the change, so here's a couple of 'em:

\description{ 1. in source code (c.tpl), if you messed with the
leftmargin/Pindent to attempt to make wrapped lines wrap differently (for
whatever reason), with the old behavior, you basically trashed the first
tab stop so it wasn't at 8 spaces' worth anymore. Yuck.

  2. some people want TWO "bullets" in front of each item. That was
completely impossible with the old system.

  3. if you only want ONE "bullet" in front of each item, you can just set
up your tab stops appropriately in the new system to get the old behavior.
(see above)

}
If none of those reasons are applicable or relevant to your site, oh well,
define MEASURE_TABS_FROM_LM and re-build.

But that won't work. Say you're bulleted list thing is a list which is a
sub-list which is a sub-list inside an indented environment.  I can't "just
get rid of the first tab stop", as I don't know (and shouldn't need to!)
where the current line start position is.

\quotation{ 3. if you only want ONE "bullet" in front of each item, you

Nope. (see above :-)

}
\quotation{If none of those reasons are applicable or relevant to your

}
I have done that, I'm just a bit confused. Also, it means I can't see a
way of writing code which is "nice" for other people to use: it depends
entirely on how they build their ATK, i.e. non-portable.

\excerptedcaption{Excerpts from atk.info-andrew: 6-May-94 Re: Tabs and the

\quotation{Sigh. This was announced in the December 1993 newsletter with
the following cryptic comment:

}
I don't read all of the newsletters. Whatever happened to a nice "list of
changes" with the release, which could easily be grep'd thru? I still
haven't tracked down all the differences between this release and the last
(purely for curiosity, I'll admit :-)

\bold{\quotation{\bold{\leftindent{\quotation{
}}}}}\quotation{Judging by the code that the above patch #ifdef's out,
somebody went to a lot of trouble to make tab stops be measured from the
LeftMargin. I'd like to know why, or any other insights or different
viewpoints anyone has to offer.}

Well, I was there :-)

The justification was based purely on bulleted lists. In almost all
typesetting systems, a bulleted list is laid out with some sort of symbol
at the start and then a nice left-aligned column of text, all indented to
an equal value. The indentation is no problem: just change the left
margin. The way you get the bullet symbol in the right place is to change
the first line's indent by a negative amount. The problem then, is in
getting the first line of text (following the bullet symbol which has
placed the "insertion point" left of the current margin) to line up with
all of the following lines. Our "solution" was to insert a tab after the
bullet and to force a tab left of the margin to take you to the left
margin. I.e. measuring all tabs from the left margin. Seemed reasonable.
 Still does mostly.

\quotation{Apparently we need two forms of tab behavior, one for C code and
one for bulleted lists.

}
Nope, just need to fix the "measurement" code so that it will always
measure in characters from the left of the screen if in TabsCharacters
mode. Maybe.

My context: I am still tinkering with my htmltext object (which now does
inline images and looks much nicer :-), and of course HTML is just
smattered with lists (of many different levels) all over the place. I'd
like a nice solution to implementing lists, and the previous mechanism
seemed ideal. This reminds me: is there any way of getting nice "bullet"
symbols. The old gnucompat code worked by snarfing some mathematical
character from the symbola font. Not too wonderful, as it was only at one
fixed point size and was a completely different font to any that the user
would likely be using (and hence change the line height). Purely for this
reason, I switched to using "*" symbols. Ugly. However, they scale, etc.
 Anybody know of a nicer solution?

Subject: AUIS Patch 6.2.2

\begindata{text,2024216}
\textdsversion{12}
\template{messages}
Dear AUIS User, \

Release 6.2.2 of the Andrew User Interface System is now available. This
is a beta release of the version which will appear in the contrib section
of X.V11R6. \

Please help us prepare for X.V11R6 by picking up and building this new
release. We hope to clear up any problems so that the R6 release will
build cleanly. Also, the following major changes have been introduced: \

Release 6.2.1:

- New parsing code to avoid GPL restrictions on binary distributions of
AUIS.

- Compiles cleanly with the system C compiler under SunOS 4.1 and Solaris
2.3.

Release 6.2.2:

- NetBSD support integrated.

- Linux support updated to use the latest version of the C library.

- SunOS support updated for compiling with gcc under SunOS 4.1. (But not
necessarily Solaris 2.3)

- More robust handling of unknown insets. \

Upgrading to this release can be done either of two ways:

1. Two patches are available in the pub/AUIS/patches directory on
ftp.andrew.cmu.edu (IP 128.2.232.154) that, when applied, will bring AUIS
release 6.2 sources up to date with release 6.2.2. Read the README in the
pub/AUIS/patches directory then use the following commands when applying
the patches: \

		patch -p < patch-6.2.1

		patch -p < patch-6.2.2

Note: omitting the -p flag will cause the resulting sources to be
inconsistent and unusable (broken!).  \

2. The directory pub/AUIS/dist-6.2 has 5 compressed tar files containing
the sources for 6.2.2. See pub/AUIS/README for instructions on assembling
the sources from the tar files. \

Kindly send your bug reports to info-andrew-bugs@andrew.cmu.edu. Technical
questions or questions about using AUIS should be directed to the
info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu distribution list, while general information can
be obtained by sending mail to info-andrew-request@andrew.cmu.edu. \

Have fun, \

\quotation{But that won't work. Say you're bulleted list thing is a list
which is a sub-list which is a sub-list inside an indented environment. I
can't "just get rid of the first tab stop", as I don't know (and shouldn't
need to!) where the current line start position is.

}
I don't completely understand the scenerio here, possibly because this all
works for me :-). I think the secret that you are perhaps missing is that
sub-lists should be left indented with a left indent style. For example,
here is a nested list.

\description{\symbola{7}	This is an item that will wrap if you make the
window narrow enough.

	Here is some extra text that is tabbed in to wrap with the previous item.

\leftindent{1.	This is left indented and it also will wrap if you make the
window narrow enough.

	Here is some extra text that is tabbed in to wrap with the previous item.

\leftindent{a.	Another list.

	More additional text.

b.	Another list.

}
2.	This is left indented and it also will wrap if you make the window
narrow enough.

}
\symbola{7}	This is an item that will wrap if you make the window narrow
enough.

}
The only places where I have used a \italic{single} tab is to begin the
``Here is some extra text'' paragraphs which are continuation paragraphs
from a previous list item. Note that I don't need to use multiple tabs to
make it work.

There is a single description (i.e. list) style around this entire set of
nested lists. I use left-indent styles for the inner lists. I guess you
could make sublist and subsublist styles that simply indent the left
margin. This assumes regular tabstops, though.

\description{\quotation{\quotation{ 2. some people want TWO "bullets" in
front of each item. That was completely impossible with the old system.

}}
}\quotation{And how is it possible in the new system? As I said earlier,
the only way I can see of working this is if you assume you are only ever
placing bullets at the outermost level (i.e. with only the need to replace
the first tab stop).

}
Easy. Make a style called **dblbul** with the \bold{lookz} style editor,
drag the leftMargin ( ->| icon) to +1", drag the paragraphStart ( [|P icon)
to 0" (1" outdent from leftMargin).

Tab stops are every 1/2", so you'll get:

That's just ``Yes<tab>1:<tab>Blah blah....<period><newline>''.  If that
were nested within some other list style, or **leftindent**, it'd
automatically shift to the right. The 1" leftMargin I set is +1"
\bold{relative to} whatever the surrounding style's leftMargin was, so
nesting isn't any problem at all.

\quotation{I can't "just get rid of the first tab stop", as I don't know
(and shouldn't need to!) where the current line start position is.}

You don't NEED to. Like I said, when a style moves the leftMargin, it
moves it from wherever it WAS. The edge of the window has no bearing.
 \smaller{(You do realize the leftMargin can be MOVED by a style, right?)}

\smaller{I have no idea where you got the idea that your style definition
needed to be aware of its nesting, or know where the left edge of the
window is... You must be doing something bizarre; mail me some of your
definitions if you'd like, they might give me some insight...

I presume your problem is that some of your files define a style (call it
**list**) which moves the paragraphStart back an inch, but only has ONE
bullet. NOW your lists look ugly:

No sweat. If you remove the first tab tab stop (1/2") from the **list**
style, then the NEW first tab stop will be at 1". Like so:

I stress again, the snapshots above will look the same whether **list** is
nested within other styles or not.

The \bold{ONLY} thing that changed is:

\description{ BEFORE, the tab stops were measured from the lefMargin.

    NOW, the tab stops are measured from the paragraphStart.

    BEFORE, the first tab stop jumped from the paragraphStart to the
leftMargin, and there was nothing you could do about it.

    NOW, the first tab stop can be \italic{\bold{wherever you want}}.
 (Including the leftMargin, obviously. \smaller{ All you have to do is make
the distance to the first tab stop equal the distance from the
paragraphStart to the leftMargin.}})

Ahhhhhh! I have seen the light! :-)

I had assumed that if tab stops were NOT being measured from the left
margin, then they were being measured absolutely from the left of the
physical device. It's depressing to realise how I've forgotten all of
the workings of this stuff... Obviously been away from ATK development
for far too long.

Thanks, Robert, for your very clear (and graphical) explanation.

Subject: tm and typescript

tm and typescript (both) are eating standard UNIX control characters!
Up to release 5 tm worked just fine, now it is eating ^D (try to submit
an at-job!). typscript instead prefers eating ^Z ( which is not quite
fine, if you want to stop a proecess).

Anybody knows how to switch off this odd behaviour?

PS: Why this parrot feature in the new tm? It always repeats commands!

Finally a proposal for future releases: Why only use 50% of the
available space - tm and typescript automatically scroll, so that the
last line is in the middle. A feature for people who fear to write over
the window's edge?

We noticed this, and other problems as well (like the font problems) that
render the new Andrew release unsuitable for production use here.

It seems that the tm and typescript problems of Version 6 are the same as
those from a couple of years ago in the problematic Patch 10 release. Is
that possible?

What OS are you using? Which shell?

This was not a deliberate change and I have no idea how it changed at all.

I should also have asked what compiler you used. (And any switches
given, like particularly if gcc did you use -traditional?)

I believe the patch below will fix the tm problem. I haven't been able
to replicate the problem with typescript however.

I'm trying to build AUIS6.2.2 for the pmax_ul4.

Now, in patch 6.2.1, system.mcr got the following line added:

Now, in \italic{overhead/class/machdep/dec_mips_42} a carefully designed

I don't know why you added /lib/libc.a to XLIB, but I suspect that using

Excerpts from netnews.comp.soft-sys.andrew: 20-May-94 Overwrite mode in
EZ ? Stefan Gronemeier@troja. (191)

> How can i have an overwrite-mode in the EZ editor? (i.e., the typed-in
> characters should replace the chars at the caret instead of being
inserted).

Hmm.  Apparently not implemented yet.

An overwrite mode can be implemented by modifying textview_SelfInsertCmd
in ANDREWSRC/atk/text/txtvcmod.c. The revised version would replace
this inner loop

	for (i = 0; i < ct; i++) {
    		text_InsertCharacters(d,pos++,&a,1);
	}

with

	for (i = 0; i < ct; i++) {
		if (OverwriteMode) {
			text_ReplaceCharacters(d, pos++, 1, &a, 1);
		}
		else
			text_InsertCharacters(d, pos++, &a, 1);
	}

You would then only have to implement commands to turn on and off the
OverwriteMode flag.

Subject: Mail monitoring in console.
Cc: info-andrew-bugs@andrew.cmu.edu

If one uses AMDS (or automatic eatmail) mail is put in ~/Mailbox.
Console has code built in to parse mail in ~/Mailbox and display a short
line from whom the mail is sent.

Unfortunately that code is unneccesarily dependent upon AFS, so if
there's no AFS, there's no info.

Here are some diffs that enables the mail info in console, even if
there's no AFS::

(Will this make it into 6.3 ? )

6.3 is frozen and will be released to the X Consortium this week.

Please understand that there are hundreds of changes I would dearly like to
see in 6.3, but thay add up to major porting problems. \

Most changes will now have to wait for the C++ version.

\quotation{Similarly, the implementation of \typewriter{\italic{*.AutoCut}}
was done basically that same way, and it won't \italic{REALLY} be a
complete feature until all those \italic{OTHER} procs are modified to check
the \typewriter{\italic{*.AutoCut}} preference, too.  \typewriter{8(}=

}
In case anyone is interested, \italic{AutoCut} is a mode we implemented to
further emulate Motif\superscript{tm} weirdness. If text is selected, the
next keypress will delete it. Pretty dangerous in my opinion, but some
people love it....

Subject: Fonts under OpenWindows

Hi folx.

I need a set of fonts which I can use to demo an andrew application with.
The ATK application is precompiled for Sunos and appears to work fine, it's
just that I need to somehow configure it to notice the ATK fonts.
Could somoeone help me out with instructions on how to do this (a 5 min job
prefereably), and/or a distribution of afont directory for me to use.

My demo is on Friday, so I have 1 day (more or less) to sort this out...
help?

Thanks in advance

Well, I sincerely hope that the "get rid of troff" project is moving along,
but in the meantime...

\description{- When you have a paragraph containing a \italic{very} long
word, troff wraps the big word down to the next line (that's good).

- When that paragraph is \underline{underlined}, troff \italic{doesn't}
wrap the big word down to the next line (that's bad).

- The actual \underline{underline} for the big word is in the right place,
but the big word itself is not (that's weird).

}
The troff that \bold{\italic{textview}} outputs to accomplish underlining
is so incredibly bizarre, I can't even tell if this is a
\bold{\italic{txttroff}} bug or a \bold{\typewriter{troff}} bug.

Note: the usual occurrence of a "big word" is as a \italic{full pathname}.
 I don't actually use the word
"\smaller{lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn\
nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng}" on a regular basis. :-)

If it's not \italic{too} icky, I'd like to hack \bold{\italic{txttroff}} to
output some more appropriate troff, but I don't even know what the troff
should \italic{BE} to handle this properly. Anyone have an idea?

Hi,

    I first want to thank you for taking my suggestion and offering a gzipped
version of the distribution. Sure cuts down on the band width.

    I am working on building version6.3 using gcc-2.5.8 on a SPARC10 running
OS4.1.3. I've run into a few things you should be aware of:

(0) using gcc

The information in the README is not quite correct. In order to use gcc you
must specify not only GCCLIB but also CC since CC=cc is the default. In
addition you need to specify PICFLAG if you choose to use shared libraries
[which is also the default for SUN systems].

(1) InstallShScript(file,dest)

The meaning of "dest" seems to vary from one install-macro to the next.
For this particular macro, "dest" is the full path name of destination file
rather than the full path to its destination directory. For some of the other
macros "dest" is the path to the destination directory. The current definition
of InstallShScript adversely effects

	   ./config/mkdirs
	   ./overhead/mkparse

I hacked the respective Imakefiles and moved on:

config/mkdirs:

There is a "#" missing from an "else" which causes all sorts of mischief
on a SUN system that is *not* using OpenWindows:

When using GCC, the ANSI_COMPILER flag should be set in the Imakefiles for
both jpeg and tiff. Jpeg will compile without this change. Tiff will not.

Quite true.

hmm? There is no choice, and you should NOT need to change the setting
of the PICFLAG. PICFLAG should be empty on SunOS machines, except in
overhead/class/lib and overhead/class/machdep/sun_sparc_41 where it is
explicitly set correctly based on the setting of GNU_ENV. Could you let
me know where and how it died? And send me your site.h and site.mcr
files?

The meaning of "dest" seems to vary from one install-macro to the next.

I suppose we should advise that users add #define BUILDANDREWINSTALL_ENV
1 to their site.h file on suns. We assume that the install program will
install either a file to a specific filename or into a given directory.

Right, but only if the unsupported LINKINSTALL_ENV option is defined.

Hmm, the only problem I ran into was that building tiff died with an
error from the assembler about a stack overflown. I ended up compiling
the single file which got that error with cc.

Another person reported this to me recently, I can't see how it could
happen. The latest version of the code compiles only a tiny section of
the code in overhead/class with -pic (or -fpic). As I recall this error
is exactly why we switched away from building everything pic.

This is to announce that a complete, new series of packages of the
\bold{Andrew User Interface System} (\bold{\italic{AUIS}}) have been made
available for Linux. These are available via anonymous FTP from
\italic{\bold{sunsite.unc.edu}}. After moving from pub/Linux/Incoming, the
files will reside in \italic{\bold{pub/Linux/X11/andrew}}.

This is a completely new release, based on AUIS 6.3 as it was just released
to the X Consortium. The full source will be available with the
contributed portion of X11R6. These packages \bold{REPLACE} all versions
previously available at \italic{sunsite}. I have grouped the full 40MB of
compiled programs and data into several logical "packages". These should
run on most any reasonably current version of Linux (I used Slackware 1.2.0
with the 1.0 Linux kernel).

The software has been configured for the relatively novice community. The
software comes in tar files varying from 0.8MB to almost 4.0MB in size.
 Everything is based on the word processing package which will fit on one
diskette and only requires about 4.5MB after being extracted.

\bold{The following packages are available:}

auis63L0-wp.lsm Summary for EZ - the Word Processor

auis63L0-wp.tgz Contains textviews, help, image, figure, raster,
typescript,

			pipescript ...

auis63L0-src.lsm	Summary for EZ - for Source Code Development

Thanks for the help in getting ATK fonts working under OpenWindows.
Things were a bit rushed as I gave the demo, but in the end everything
went smoothly thanks to useful advice from Rob Ryan in particular
(pointing me at ftp'able OpenWindows fonts) and others on this mailing
list.

The demo went very well, with quite a bit of interest generated in the
htmltext editor and in the Andrew Toolkit in particular!

So, again "Thanks!"
