Hello :

Thank you for fixing my andrew 6.3.2 fro linux R6. but I have ne mmore \

little question. I was wondering how could I restructor the font menu so \

that it is a little clear for most people. What I mean by this is that \

in the place of bigger or smaller I may be able to add the font weight, \

size, or pitch. I also would like to be able to specify different fonts \

by way of a default as well as throught the menu such as times, or roman

within the same document. I would truly be in your debt if You could \

help me make these changes or inform me how to make the changes I seek \

throught hard coding the changes or by way of a preference file.

Thank You .

is that

}\quotation{in the place of bigger or smaller I may be able to add the font

}\quotation{size, or pitch.

}
You really think that would be clearer than it is NOW??

One of the nice things about the "Bigger" and "Smaller" styles is that they
are _RELATIVE_. If Joe Schmo has his BodyFont preference set to andysans8,
but Suzy Q prefers 16-point fonts, "Bigger" and "Smaller" have the same
relative effect on both users. But if you start putting FORCED absolute
sizes into your documents, either Joe will think they're too big, or Suzy
will think they're too small, or BOTH.

\quotation{I also would like to be able to specify different fonts

}\quotation{by way of a default as well as throught the menu such as times,
or roman

}\quotation{within the same document.

}
There are "Sans Serif" and "Typewriter" styles on the "Font" menu card
already, to do that. There's rarely any good reason to FORCE serifs or no
serifs; these are best left to the individual who is VIEWING the document,
to control using their own BodyFont preference.

Of course, I'm coming at this from a "large multi-user site" perspective.
If it's just you and your standalone machine, then all you have to do is
add some more style definitions to $ANDREWDIR/lib/tpls/default.tpl. That
is where the existing "Font" menu (et al) styles are defined. I wouldn't
encourage that, though, because if you ever share that document with
someone ELSE, those extra style definitions will be MISSING when the other
person views it. (They have their own unmodified default.tpl, dig?)

If you have a particular document where a section of text just HAS TO look
exactly a certain way, you can define a style _in_ the document _itself_,
rather than in a template. Then you never have to worry about the style
definition being available in other people's default.tpl.

See the help files on "templates" and "lookz".

Some time ago, I reported a problem with messages for Liunx and X11R5. In
spite of help from a number of people including Nathaniel Borenstein and
Craig Everhart, I was unable to find the cause for the problem. If you
recall, messages would not read mail that was already delivered to
~/Mailbox.

Terry Gliedt's new version for X11R6 does not have this problem and
messages is working just fine on my system.

It's unfortunate that it's not possible to find the original problem.

\bold{Subject}: Announce: Linux version auis63L4

This is to announce that a complete, new series of packages of the
\bold{Andrew User Interface System} (\bold{\italic{AUIS}}) have been made
available for Linux. These are available via anonymous FTP from two places:

	\italic{\bold{sunsite.unc.edu}} in \italic{\bold{pub/Linux/X11/andrew}}

		and

	\italic{\bold{ftp.andrew.cmu.edu}} in \italic{\bold{pub/AUIS/bin-dist/linux

}}
This is a refresh of the earlier release, still based on AUIS 6.3. This
version contains a few fixes, but its primary purpose is to make an X11R6
version of AUIS available. I have grouped the full 40MB of compiled
programs and data into several logical "packages". These should run on any
Linux system using XFree3.x (I used Slackware 2.1.0 with a 1.92 Linux
kernel). \

tpg@cfa.org ********* Please note my new mailing address *********

The Andrew User Interface System is an integrated set of tools that allow
you to create, use, and mail documents and applications containing
typographically formatted text and embedded objects. AUIS has three
principal components:

\indent{The \bold{Andrew User Environment} (\bold{\italic{AUE}}) is an
integrated set of applications beginning with a 'generic object' editor
(\italic{ez}), a help system, a system monitoring tool (\italic{console}),
an editor-based shell interface (\italic{typescript}), and support for
printing multi-media documents. \

The \bold{Andrew Toolkit} (\bold{\italic{ATK}}) is a portable
user-interface toolkit. It provides a dynamically-loadable,
object-oriented environment wherein objects can be embedded in one-another.
Thus, one could edit text that contains not only fonts and styles, but also
embedded raster images, spreadsheets, drawing editors, equations, simple
animations, etc. These embedded objects could themselves contain other
objects, including text. ATK is an open system so programmers can create
new objects that can be embedded as easily as those system-defined objects.

The \bold{Andrew Message System} (\bold{\italic{AMS}}) provides a
multi-media interface to mail and bulletin-boards. AMS supports several
mail management strategies and implements many advanced features including
authentication, return receipts, automatic sorting of mail, vote collection
and tabulation, enclosures, audit trails of related messages, and
subscription management. It also provides a variety of interfaces that
support ttys and low-function personal computers in addition to the
high-function workstations. }\

The software has been configured for the relatively novice community. The
software comes in tar files varying from 0.8MB to almost 4.0MB in size.
Everything is based on the word processing package and only requires about
4.5MB after being extracted.

\bold{The following packages are available:}

I just got AUIS 7.2.1 running on my machine and I think it is great. Allow

I find the default key mapping a little different to what I am used to.

I tried the Vi key mapping mode for I am quite familar with Vi. But, I was

hoping I could get some help in making the key mapping in EZ more like

Word Perfect or MS Word. Does anyone have any ideas on what would be the

easiest way to do this? It would also be nice if I could put a better \

Another question I have is when I do a switch file and enter in just a

Hello,

Are there papers and demo sources available about the 7th Release of

Andrew? I'd like to see how the implementaion and the application of the

Andrew classes has changed after shifting to C++.

How much of the code is reimplemented and how much is converted

automatically? Are there any changes in the module struture of atk?

(for instance the text-classes: do you still have modules with static
routines

like txtvcmds.c, textvcmod.c etc.?)

What is the state of the documentation? Are all the doc files changed to

the C++ implementation? Are the missing docs completed?

Two more questions: Are there short-term plans the give the suite objects

a MOTIF lookalike apearance? Are there still plans to port Andrew to

the PC world (e.g. OS/2, Windows NT)?

Thank you very much in advance,

        Peter.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any other information about

I don't know of any papers on what we have done. A one user source

license is available for the ALPHA releases of release 7, the license

comes with NO support. (Contact Ann Marie Zanger, az28@andrew.cmu.edu

for more information.) It may not work at all on your platform. (In

particular only SunOS 4.1, Ulrix 4.2 and 4.3a , HP-UX 9.0, and AIX 3.2

are known to work at all. No work has been done with any other

platforms.)

Nothing in the toolkit proper was reimplemented. The runtime type

system, and dynamic loading were reimplemented. The build environment

was augmented to ease the task of constructing executables, libraries

and dynamic objects with automatic selection of the needed ATK libraries.

The conversion didn't change the module structure at all. (Unless you

count the addition of a root class, which was previously implicit in

Class-C.)

There are a few documents on the basics which have been updated to C++,

but most of the documents have not been updated. (nor completed in many

cases.)

The current plans call for a new widget set to be created with a Motif

appearance. (In AUIS 6.3 I believe some of the suite widgets have the

resources for a Motifish appearance, but I don't recall if it is the

default.)

My next problem is printing with insets. Every time I print with an

The README for bison-A2.3 has been updated to indicate how to adapt the

C++parser for non-Andrew environments. (Just delete the offending

references.)

It is available for anonymous ftp from \

	ftp.andrew.cmu.edu/pub/AUIS/bison

or via the web on \

Fred Hansen

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/wjh/public/Home.html

Extract from README:

============================================

		Bison version A2.3

Bison is the GNU parser generator; an alternative to yacc. This directory \

contains Bison version A2.3, derived from GNU Bison version 1.22.

It also includes parser generators for C and C++ which have these
advantages

No symbol conflicts. Each parser is represented by a single name.

Shared parser code. All grammars use a single instance of the \

		parser object code.

C++ object. For C++, the generated parser is an object. \

License free. The license on the parser code permits effectively

		unhindered use.

Bison-A2.3 has these advantages over other versions of Bison:

Errors in the grammar do not terminate input; all errors are \

found in one pass. A complete example and test case is \

the file mess.y in the distribution.

		\

Tokens may now be specified as multiple-character strings:

"<=" can appear where formerly would have to be LESSEQ.

...

Note on C++parser: This code has some vestigial ATK references. \

For non-Andrew usage delete the lines containing "ATK" and "andrewos",

except retain the class declaration and change it to

	class parser \{
