Subject: Import latex or PostScript documents into Andrew document

Hi:

The subject line pretty much says it all ;-) Actually, just a means to convert
the formatted text to Andrew format would be fine!

Any way to do this?

Thanks in advance

Subject: How to make preview work?
Cc: steveg@iplmail.orl.mmc.com

As per the FAQ I came up with a set of FormatCommand: and PrintCommand:
statements for my global.prf file so that print works fine:

*.FormatCommand: cat /tmp/%s.n | gpic|gtbl|geqn|gtroff -Tps |
*.PrintCommand: grops | lpr

Note that this is almost identical to the last example listed in Q9 of the FAQ,
the only variance being that I use -Tps instead of -Tpsc. I also tried

*.FormatCommand: groff -pte -E -Z /tmp/%s.n |

though I believe that the -Z option on groff will make it behave the same as
the |gpic|gtbl|geqn|gtroff anyhow.

No matter what I try when I run ez and pull down to preview on the menu it
claims that the preview window should appear soon but it never does show up ;-(

Possibly related to this problem is that my /usr/andrew/bin does not contain
either ezprint or preview, and if I run help these commands are listed but
selecting them brings up an error message saying that no help is available for
that subject.

I opted not to build either AMS or AFS if that makes a difference, all I really
need for my application is ATK. I tried building both with and without the
 #define ANDREW_PRINTING_ENV 1
in my allsys.h file, same results both times. Any ideas?

There is a third preference you need to set: PreviewCommand. Mine is set
to something like:

\quotation{*.PreviewCommand: psdit > /tmp/print.$USER.$$; gv
/tmp/print.$USER.$$; rm -f /tmp/print.$USER.$$}

In other words, I use ghostview to preview the PostScript from the print.
 The AUIS 'preview' program should still work, but it does not preview
images.

I don't know why you haven't got $ANDREWDIR/bin/preview.  The
andrew-source/atk/Imakefile shows that preview will only be built if
DITROFF_ENV is defined during the build. It is defined by default in
andrew-source/config/allsys.h, so check to be sure it is not undefined in
platform.h, system.h, or your site.h.  \

No really good ways.

I have converted PostScript files, but I do it by hand. Basically,
everything inside parentheses is the text. Getting the images out takes a
lot more work; when they are raster images, I convert them to AUIS raster
objects.

Latex text should be possible to convert mechanically, but no one has asked
before. If you want to write a converter in Ness, you could probably get
some help by looking at $ANDREWDIR/lib/ness/fromrtf.n.

Subject: RS/6000 AUIS preview blank first page bug fix.
Cc: vrt@MIT.EDU

I expect that CMU never encountered this problem because the troff they
run was frozen at a known working version from 1987.

The rest of us miserable people have to put up with whatever troff the
UNIX integrator happens to put on the diskies.

RS/6000 troff likes to put a 'codeset' sub-command of the 'x' device
command in the dvi that it emits.

This has caused the odd behavior of the first page in an Andrew preview
always coming up blank on the RS/6000 (and perhaps other hosts with more
recent troff.)

The following patch fixes it here at MIT and will probably fix it for you.

Would one of you kind keepers of the source tree audit this horrendously
complex (sic.) patch and merge it into the standard release.

\heading{Background Info About Styles and Flags}

Each environment that gets wrapped around text has a begin and an end flag.
 These "flags" are boolean values that determine whether text inserted
exactly where the environment begins/ends should be \italic{encompassed by}
that environment, or be inserted \italic{outside} that environment.

\heading{Bugs (I plan to fix them. Soliciting feedback, suggestions,
objections, whatever)}

\description{Bug1.	When an environment is copied and pasted, the
newly-inserted one uses the default begin and end flag values, rather than
the values the environment originally had.

Fix1.	Saving all those flags on a per-environment basis is completely
impractical, and pointless in almost all cases. A more practical and
useful solution is to make the \bold{style definition} which that
environment uses determine what the begin and end flags should be. That
is, the style object would have additional attributes "Inclusive Start" and
"Inclusive End".

Example1.	The **comment** style in source code (\typewriter{/* */} in C++)
would disable both flags. The **linecomment** style in source code
(\typewriter{//} in C++) would disable the "Inclusive Start", but
\bold{en}able "Inclusive End", so that text inserted at the end of a
linecomment will be part of the linecomment.

}
\description{Bug2.	Whenever an environment includes the beginning of the
paragraph, text inserted in front of that paragraph is encompassed by that
environment... \bold{even if the "begin flag" of that environment is FALSE!}
 I think a semicheesy fix for this was started but not completed (see Bug3
below).

Fix2.	Get rid of this "feechur", since Fix1 will make the same
functionality available in styles \smaller{(like **chapter**)} where it is
deemed appropriate, but \bold{without} screwing up other styles
\smaller{(like **symbola**)} where that behavior is \italic{not}
appropriate.

}
\description{Bug3.	The style object already \italic{has} attributes called
"Keep Prior NL" and "Keep Next NL". As far as I can tell, these attributes
do \bold{NOTHING}.

Fix3.	Get rid of them. They will be superceded by the more general
"Inclusive Start" and "Inclusive End" attributes mentioned in Fix1.

}
\smaller{Disclaimers: Attribute names are subject to change (alternate
suggestions welcome).  Can't make any promises about implementation dates.}

I believe this behavior was a deliberate design. The idea being that one
could put a paragraph in a style and then add stuff at the beginning and
have in included in the style, regardless of what the style is.

No doubt about it.  BUT...

\quotation{The idea being that one could put a paragraph in a style and

...the validity of this "feechur" is highly suspect. If I insert some text
in front of a bullet, I \bold{don't want} to see garbage characters. If
the bullet happens to be the first thing in the paragraph, I \bold{STILL}
don't want to see garbage characters.

On the other hand, if I type at the beginning of a **bold** style, I
probably want that text to be **bold** regardless of whether the style
starts at the beginning of the paragraph or not.

preference, I want it to be OBEYED!!!\
\enddata{fnote,540034304}
\view{fnotev,540034304,47,0,0}}

(Some less contrived examples are function-names and \typewriter{/*
*/}-comments at the start of a line in source code.
 \bold{\italic{srctextview}} overrides \smaller{(and noop's)} the
PrepareInsertion() method to kill-off this "feechur", but if you ask me, it
shouldn't \italic{have to}.)

ATK has a versatile and useful feature in the
\typewriter{\italic{StylesIncludeBeginning}} and
\typewriter{\italic{StylesIncludeEnd}} preferences \smaller{(to make things
work the way the user wants)}, and individual flags on each environment
\smaller{(to give the programmer precedence if he wants to take it)}, but
then it throws that whole system in the trash whenever there happens to be
a newline character preceding the style!

An additional \typewriter{\italic{StylesIncludePrecedingNL}} preference
would be tolerable, so long as it \bold{doesn't} take precedence over how
the \italic{programmer} wanted that environment to act.

\heading{Proposed Order of Precedence

}This is how I think the text(view) should determine whether characters
inserted at the beginning/end of an environment are to be excluded_by or
encompassed_by that environment:

\description{ Priority1.	Environment flags (set by programmer). These can
only be TRUE or FALSE, there is no "Don't Care" value. Since there is no
way to determine later whether it was \italic{the programmer} that had set
them, forget this and proceed to Priority2.

  Priority2.	Style definition (the "Inclusive Start" and "Inclusive End"
attributes of the style that this environment uses). If they are neither
enabled nor disabled, proceed to Priority3.

  Priority3.	User preferences (if at beginning of paragraph, use
\typewriter{\italic{StylesIncludePrecedingNL}}.  else use
\typewriter{\italic{StylesIncludeBeginning}}/(\typewriter{\italic{End}})
preference). If the preferences are not set, proceed to Priority4.

  Priority4.	FALSE(excluded) at the beginning of the environment,
TRUE(encompassed) at the end of the environment.

}
Using the proposed system, you'd set
\typewriter{\italic{StylesIncludePrecedingNL:yes}} in
\italic{global.preferences} and get the exact same behavior you do now,
\bold{except} in places where somebody \smaller{(a programmer or
template_creator)} has a good reason to make ATK behave otherwise. In such
situations, all the programmer need do is set a couple attributes in the
style definitions, which will override user preferences \smaller{(as do all
the \italic{other} style-defn attributes, like "Font Size" and "Font
Family")}.

Subject: Cursor strangness

I built ATK on one machine and everything works pretty much as expected. Then I
tried building on another machine (both Sun 4, SunOS 4.1) and when I run ez on
the second machine my cursor is a letter instead of the bitmap it's supposed to
be (for example, in the text window I get a lower case a instead of the little
curved pointer).  Any ideas?

You do not have /usr/andrew/X11fonts installed on the X-server machine.
It might also be possible you have a preferences setting (or a global
file) which says "*.AddFontPath: No" and then did not specify this path
on your X font path.

Subject: Information needed

Hi,
I recently installed AMS and Andrew Word Processor, which are much
better than anything I have used. I have following questions, the
answers to which would be greatly appreciated:

Are there other programs (FTP, news readers, etc.) with Andrew interface?

Which is the best site for softwares with Andrew interface ? Any mailing
list or news-forum ?

Lastly, has Andrew been ported to OS/2 ?

With thanks,

Raj

From "Andrew Word Processor", it sound like you have installed the Linux
distribution. Glad you find them useful. Watch for articles in the
Linux Journal coming over the next few months.

> Are there other programs (FTP, news readers, etc.) with Andrew interface?

No FTP interface. Actually nes can be read with messages, but requires a
huge investment which might make sense for a university like CMU, but
not for smaller units. It probably requires things which are not
distributed either.

The question is a little tricky. Doing "ls /usr/andrew/bin" will show
you some binaries which will lead you to other programs like bush, fad,
chart, pipescript, typescript, and raster to name a few that come to
mind. But that's not all that you can do. Most of the functionality of
AUIS lies in the dynamic objects (found in /usr/andrew/dlib/atk).
However, looking at these names isn't always very informative.

Check the menu cards. For instance the Media card leads you to the image
dynamic object. Probably you best bet is to start with help (auishelp)
and start looking around. Good luck.

Someone from CMU will need to answer you with more detail on this. I
will agree that is quite complex. What exists that I know of is in
/usr/andrew/doc/ams. These files (and alot more on other things) are in
the AUIS63L0-doc package for Linux.

I pulled over auis-6.2.2 and tried to build it on

but still I'd appreciate mail to me with suggestions, etc. I will

This problem never happened to us for some reason. (We're running HP-UX
9.03.) The fix I believe is to simply put the following line in your
site.mcr:

LEXLIB=

In addition to doing that you should probably update to AUIS 6.3. (It
is available from ftp.andrew.cmu.edu:pub/AUIS.)

Hello!
I'm using AUIS-6.3 , and i'm using ez editor to write C programs.
With Lookz style editor inside ez i can customize the look of my text
( for example i can do that all the C keywords will be red and italic
instead black and bold )
The question is : how can i save this changes so they will affect
all the C source code that i'm writing with ez. i.e. i want that this
changes will take effect immediatly after starting ez.
Seems like changing /usr/andrew/lib/tpls/c.tpl has no effect on this
styles.

Thank you in advance.

Well, since style definitions can only be saved in "ATK datastream"-format
files, and a C compiler would obviously gag on a datastream file, that
rules out saving the styles with the file itself.

Each time a C program is loaded, the style defeinitions are either:

\description{ 1. fetched in from \italic{c.tpl} (assuming you have
"template=c" on your \typewriter{addfiletype} line), OR

  2. created by the ctext dataobject (if you DIDN'T tell it to load a
template). These generated styles have reasonable default attributes, but
color isn't one of them.

}
\quotation{Seems like changing /usr/andrew/lib/tpls/c.tpl has no effect on
this

}\quotation{styles.

}
It \bold{should}. \smaller{(At a large site, you'd normally leave that
system template alone, and let people copy it and modify their
\italic{$HOME/tpls/c.tpl} with their custom colors. Since you're messing
with the system template, I presume you have your own standalone machine
with ATK installed)}

Make sure the \typewriter{addfiletype} line in your \italic{$HOME/.ezinit}
(or \italic{global.ezinit}) looks like this:

\example{addfiletype .c ctext "template=c"

                     \red{^^^^^^^^^^^^}

}
And then \italic{c.tpl} \underline{will} be picked up. If it still doesn't
work, make sure your \typewriter{TEMPLATEPATH} environment variable is set
up to include the directory that \italic{c.tpl} is in.

Chech your LD_LIBRARY_PATH setting. It will probably include /usr/lib and
/lib. Whatever the order they appear in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, \red{reverse} that
order and try to build testobj.do again:

\typewriter{% cd testing

% make testobj.do

}
Details: some boneheaded thing that Sun did imlementing shared libraries.

Subject: ATK --> MIME?

Is there a way (preferably a filter) of converting ATK formatted
documents into MIME formatted documents?

This would be a necessary first step in converting legacy "messages"
folders into something compatible with ucb-style MUAs. Has anyone
addressed this problem?

Thanks.
