Subject: Console bug (Version 7.6, ATK 17.0)

There is a minor bug in console that occurs once a year, on Jan 1st.

If you start a console on Jan 1st, it will never display the date
until Jan 2nd.  Here's why:

Console checks to see if the date needs to be updated by checking the
current day of the year (which ranges from 0 to 364 or 365) against
the day of the year the last time it checked the time (called
OldDate.) If they differ, the date display is updated.

However, OldDate is incorrectly initialized to 0, so on the zeroth day
of the year, Jan 1st, console will think that the date is correctly
displayed when it has never been drawn at all.

Similar problems may exist with the OldHours and OldMinutes variables.
All of these should probably be initialized to something like -1.

Dear Susan,

My understanding is that EZ document must be formatted by troff to produce
a postscript format file before it can be printed. In SGI Indigo, it comes
with a postscript printer driver. Is it possible to let EZ print its
document directly to postscript printer using the printer driver ?

Thanks in advance.

The problem: Templates within templates cause "Recursive templates disallowed
- ignoring." error.... sometimes.

I have in my .ezinit:

    addfiletype .mine text "template=myexample"

and myexample.tpl contains:

    ----------------------------

\typewriter{    \\begindata\{text,537398262\}

    \\textdsversion\{12\}

=>  \\template\{mystyles\}

    This is my example text.

    Blah blah blah.

    \\enddata\{text,537398262\}

}    ----------------------------

This works great, as long as you edit a plain text file. However, if you edit
a readonly (chmod -w) file, or a file with styles in it, ez gives a "Recursive
templates disallowed - ignoring." error.

The reason is obvious; my question is, why SHOULDN'T it work? It would be a
terrific feature if it worked in all cases, but it currently only works when
editing a plain text file.

(Was it designed that way, or is it just a bug in text_ReadTemplate or
something?)

I am having great difficulty compiling the "andrew" material from the
MIT X distribution -- some Makefiles are apparently improperly built
by imake. I have no idea how to work around this... Is there an
alternate place where I can obtain the software? Also, do you have a
list of programs and their functions? -- the distributed information
is rather vague, I'm afraid.

Steve,

The distribution on the X tape is the same that is available from CMU via
anonymous ftp (emsworth.andrew.cmu.edu). What machine type are you trying to
build Andrew on? We haven't had anyone mention problems with improperly built
Makefiles to date. If you send me a copy of your config/site.\{h,mcr\} files,
I'll be able to help you along.

You should be running imake in the top-level directory as follows:

imake -I. -I./config -Timake.tmpl -s Makefile -DTOPDIR=.

A copy of your compilation log would also be helpful to determine the problem.

I am running Andrew on SGI Indigo which does not have device-independent

The traditional way of dealing with this is NEVER to type <return> to an ATK
window unless you really want the line to continue in column 1 at that point.
 That is, just let ATK wrap text into the window. Then, finally, when
Messages or whatever sends your text as mail, it will wrap it comfortably into
80 columns.

Thus, this message (as it sits in front of me) is in two long lines of text
(that look like paragraphs) plus a signature. ATK wrapped the first one onto
four display lines. This one has three display lines. Your mileage will vary
depending on font and window width.

Subject: Adding color to template?

\begindata{text,2046464}
\textdsversion{12}
\template{messages}
I've recently experimented with trying to add color menus to the sendmessage
window. I had no problem getting the menus to show up -- I added something
like the following to messages.tpl:

\yellow{\\define\{yellow

menu:[Color,Yellow]

attr:['color' 'Yellow']\}

}
(repeated, obviously, for a variety of colors) This causes the menu items to
show up just when you'd expect them to, but they have no effect when used in
sendmessage. (By the way, I wrapped the lines above in a "yellow" style, but
I don't expect anyone to be able to see it...)

On the other hand, if I base a document on the template messages.tpl, editing
it with ez, the colors work perfectly. Very strange.

Any ideas what might be going wrong when the template is used in sendmessage?
 I know I wrote the program, but color support was added "after my time" and I
don't have a clue why it doesn't work... -- Nathaniel

Subject: PS -- Adding color to template?

It might be relevant to recall that when messages adds the "messages"
template, it always calls ReadTemplate with the "inserttemplatetext"
parameter set to FALSE. I don't think this should matter, but it is
probably the case that most other uses of templates don't do this.

Aha! I also just tried using the "Add Template" menu in ez, and if you
use it to add a template with color menus, you get exactly the same
behavior in ez that I reported with sendmessage -- the menus show up,
but have no effect.

I conjecture, therefore, that there is a bug in text_ReadTemplate that
causes color menus to not work when inserttemplatetext is false.
Probably ought to be added to the bug list. -- Nathaniel

I have a X11R4 version of Andrew Toolkit. While looking through some of the
documents (in the help or doc directory) I noticed it looks TeXish. If they
are indeed TeX files (or any of TeX descendents) could you tell me how I
can print them and let me know how I can some of the related TeX macros that
do not seem to be the standard ones?

We have noticed that color styles in templates only seem to work for new
documents. Editing an existing document which uses the template ignores
the colors specified by the template. Looks like a bug. Could this be
what you are seeing?

ATK documentation is created with ATK (!). There is a converter in ATK called
ezprint, but to run it you have to have built ATK. The print process converts
ATK to troff and uses the macros in .../andrew/lib/tmac/tmac.atk.

I have been trying to compile Andrew for a Sun 4, Sun OS 4.1.1 and MIT
X11R5 for quite some time. The make World kept bombing out with

/usr/local/bin/mkfontdir /usr/itc/released/X11fonts
/usr/local/bin/mkfontdir: failed to create directory in /usr/itc/released/X11fonts

After remaking mkfontdir did not help, I put some time into the problem and
eventually tracked the failure down to

    if (BitmapGetInfoBitmap ((FontPathElementPtr) 0, &info, (FontEntryPtr) 0, file_name) != Successful)

in mkfontdir.c. This call would fail for ANY file in the
/usr/itc/released/X11fonts directory. Looking at the log file of make World,
I noticed that the files in this directory were generated by bdftosnf but did
not have a *.snf file extension, as shown in this excerpt from the make log:

/usr/local/bin/bdftosnf /tmp/msgs14.bdf >msgs14.pcf
/usr/itc/released/etc/install -c -m 0444 msgs14.pcf \
/usr/itc/released/X11fonts/msgs14.pcf

I renamed the files in X11fonts to *.snf and mkfontdir worked fine. (I
am presently running the make World again to verify that it works.)

My question is why was the output of the bdftosnf function called *.pcf?

Does changing the file extension to .snf have any deletrious effects?

Why would this screw up mkfontdir?

Thanks for any comments.

I am trying to run Andrew applications on a DEC VT1200 X-Terminal. The
X-Terminal gets its fonts from a DECsystem 5000/200 running Ultrix 4.2
via tftp.

However, when I start up typescript, it sits there for about 5 minutes
and then exits with a message about being unable to set the the font
path to /usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/. . I have already loaded the fonts
in the X-terminal, how do I get typescript (or other applications) to
stop setting the font path.

This also has the consequence of hosing the fonts and I have to reload
them.

The default value for the macro XFC (X Font Converter) is
/usr/bin/X11/bdftopcf. You overrode that value because you have the X
binaries in /usr/local/bin, but you set XFC = /usr/local/bin/bdftosnf instead
of bdftopcf. The default is to create PCF fonts for X11R5. So, you were
creating SNF fonts with .pcf extensions and that was disturbing mkfontdir.

You could just go with the SNF fonts or you could set the macro XFC (in
andrew/config/site.mcr) to point to /usr/local/bin/bdftopcf and rebuild the
world.

It will attempt to place the Andrew font directory ($\{ANDREWDIR\}/X11fonts)
in your fontpath if it isn't already there. I don't understand why this is a
problem. Could you explain where you loaded the fonts on the X-terminal. If
it is the situation where you need to run the binaries via tftp but you cannot
access fonts via the same mechanism, then either 1) there is a bug with you
X-terminals Xserver or 2) we need to add a new feature (preference?) to
disable the fontpath manipulations when a new window is created for people
using X-terminals.

Basically, could you explain the situation a bit more thoroughly?

Subject: Andrew fonts for XVision

\begindata{text,18647740}

Has anyone tried to use ATK fonts under \italic{XVision}, a PC X11R4 product
that runs at the same time as MS-Windows 3.0? I built ATK on a workstation
such that it made a bdf format font directory. I transferred these down to the
PC and converted them to .fon format with \bold{bdftofon}, which comes with
the \italic{XVision} product. I believe the .fon format is a \italic{Windows}
format. I am using ISO fonts, and ATK applications pick up normal text fonts
correctly through the fonts.alias file. If I try to use certain Andrew
specific fonts, such as aptcsr20, it crashes the server. The \bold{bdftofon}
program doesn't complain about any of the bdf files, and they look okay to me
after browsing through some of them.

Some of the ATK fonts work correctly: table12 and the messages fonts work
fine. The cursor fonts and xshape10 and most of the others do not. Thanks in
advance for any suggestions.

Hi,

I'm interested in groff, and I think I know where to get *sources*, but
I don't wanna build gcc, then g++, then groff. Does anyone have SPARC
4.1 OS binaries available for FTP, for the entire groff package?

thanks,

The Andrew Toolkit Consortium of Carnegie Mellon University is proud to
announce the return of...

\center{\bold{THE REMOTE ANDREW DEMO SERVICE!}}

The Remote Andrew Demo service was first announced in mid-October. After a
testing phase, it was taken out of service for enhancements and bug fixes. We
are pleased to announce that it has now been returned to service.

This revolutionary network service allows you to run Andrew Toolkit
applications without the overhead of obtaining or compiling the Andrew
software. It used to be that trying out Andrew required ftp'ing megabytes of
source and performing a lengthy build... but no longer! The Remote Andrew
Demo service will have you running Andrew software within 5 minutes.

You need a host machine on the Internet, and you need to be running the X11
window system. A simple "finger" command will allow you to experience ATK
applications firsthand. You'll be able to compose multimedia documents,
navigate through the interactive Andrew Tour, and use the Andrew Message
System to browse through CMU's three thousand bulletin boards and newsgroups.

\center{\bold{HOW TO USE THE SERVICE}}

To use the Remote Andrew Demo service, simply run the following command on
your machine:

\leftindent{finger help@atk.itc.cmu.edu}

The service will give you any further instructions that may be necessary.

\center{\bold{WHAT IS ANDREW?}}

The Andrew Toolkit (ATK) is a multimedia graphical toolkit running under X11.
 It provides, among other things, an editor for composing rich-text documents
complete with embedded insets such as raster images, spreadsheets, graphs,
drawings, animations -- even embedded audio and video. Documents can be
cross-referenced with embedded "hyperlinks."

ATK includes an application builder, extension language, and a rich set of
object types which make the creation of complex graphical interfaces easy.
 ATK is an open system, allowing new object types to be written in C. There's
also an ATK-based mail/news program which allows the sending of graphical ATK
documents through the mail. It complies with the forthcoming Internet RFC
concerning multimedia mail formats (the "MIME" RFC).

ATK has been a part of the campus computing environment of Carnegie Mellon
University since 1986 and has continuously evolved to remain at the forefront
of multimedia information technology. The Andrew Toolkit, release 5.0, is
available free of charge on MIT's current distribution of X11 (release 5), in
the directory contrib/andrew. And coming soon, a binary distribution of
Andrew on CD-ROM, compiled for several of the most popular Unix platforms.

Subject: groff and ATK

\begindata{text,2556816}
\textdsversion{12}
\template{messages}
Just a note to say that I'm currently using groff 1.04 (built with g++ 1.40.3
(built with gcc 1.40)) with ATK 5.0.0. It seems to work fine with embedded
PS, and all.

I'm using the following printcommand, previewcommand, and formatcommand:

\example{formatcommand:	cat /tmp/%s.n | /usr/gnu/bin/gpic -D -Tpsc |
/usr/gnu/bin/gtbl | /usr/gnu/bin/geqn -m2 | /usr/gnu/bin/gtroff -E -Tpsc |
/usr/transcript/bin/psdit |

previewcommand: andypspreview %s

printcommand:	andypsprint

}
("andypspreview" invokes the user's favorite PostScript previewer around here,
"andypsprint" ships a PS file to the user's favorite PS printer).

Note that I'm still using Adobe's Transcript "psdit" (instead of grops), and
I'm using the ditroff "devpsc" font metrics supplied as part of the Transcript
distribution. This is because the fonts supplied as part of the groff "devps"
device, while they work mostly, don't really match. There is no "C" font
(though the "CR" font works OK), the names of the special chars seem to change
("devps" doesn't seem to supply a "ul" character in the "SS" font, for
example), and errors like "numeric overflow" seem to happen when I use the
"devps" device and grops.

Has anyone tried to supply the "devpsc" device in the format required by
groff? Seems like it wouldn't be too difficult.

Bill

OK, I have a Digital VT1000 X-Terminal running Terminal Manager 2.2
(latest FC0).

Under Customize settings for the terminal you can set the font path
via LAT or tftp.

The line for LAT reads:

ROM,LUDWIG::

the line for tftp reads:

ROM,192.52.218.45:/home/tftpboot/vt1000/font.paths

Above ANN:: is the name of a node on our VAXcluster. 192.52.218.45 is
the internet address of a DECsystem 5000 running Ultrix 4.2 with X11R5
patch level 8 and andrew (latest version) also installed.

The file font.paths is used by the vt1000 to find the fonts. Here is a
small excerpt

/usr/local/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/courO08.pcf -adobe-courier-medium-o-normal--11-80-100-100-m-60-iso8859-1
/usr/local/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/courO18.pcf -adobe-courier-medium-o-normal--25-180-100-100-m-150-iso8859-1
...
/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/msgs14.pcf msgs14
/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/msgs10.pcf msgs10
/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/blshft12.pcf blshft12
/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/bits1.pcf bits1
/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/gofont10.pcf gofont10
/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/con12.pcf con12
/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/con10.pcf con10
/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/donz12.pcf donz12
/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/kalfnt12.pcf kalfnt12

As you can see, the andrew fonts are listed.

When I start an application like typescript, it displays the
following:

Starting typescript (Version 7.2, ATK 5.0.0); please wait...

This will take about 5 minutes and then I get the following from the
terminal manager:

Set font path 192.52.218.45:/usr/local/andrew/X11fonts/. failed.
Continuing to parse rest of font path.

And typescript aborts with a segmentation fault. Oddly enough, loading
fonts from LUDWIG:: which has Motif fonts installed, brings up
typescript.

The fonts don't look right, of course (I have the letter a for the
pointer). Also, tcsh is my shell and I don't see what I have typed
until I hit return.

I hope this is enough detail.

When I had this class of problems under X11.3 X-View, we crerated an
alias file for all the missing fonts, and it cleared up the problem.
Good luck.

I believe that there is a demo of various Andrew things that can be
run over the network. Could anyone let me know how?

(I'm having a hard time installing it from source, so I want to look
at it first to decide if it's worthwhile!)

Brian,

The Andrew Toolkit Consortium recently announced the (re)availability of the
Remote Demo Service. I will forward that notice to you following this message.

What type of problems are you having installing Andrew? If you send me a copy of your
config/site.h and site.mcr files and an error log, we'll try to get you
started.

Subject: MIME and conditions

I noticed that the most recent announcement (about the return of the
demo service) mentioned that ATK/AMS would support MIME in the future.
Private correspondence with nsb revealed that he had sent MIME patches
to [whatever the ATK folks call themselves today]. This tends to
indicate that a new Andrew release is in the offing.

What will be the distribution conditions for the new release? (As I
recall, Fred Hansen explicitly said some months ago that there was no
guarantee of the continuing free availability of the Andrew software.)

We call ourselves

	The Andrew Toolkit Consortium

The next distribution will be on CD-ROM and will be similar to the X.V11R5
version. This relase will not have the MIME extensions.

\quotation{What will be the distribution conditions for the new release? (As
I recall, Fred Hansen explicitly said some months ago that there was no
guarantee of the continuing free availability of the Andrew software.)

Members of the consortium will get new releases regularly. Others will have
to wait for our annual distribution via the X Consortium.

Perhaps we can make special arrangements for MIME because of its unique status
as an internet standard.

Subject: R5 comments

Some random comments on R5 ATK:

The "recessed" lettering on the buttons looks awful. Please remove it
or add an option to (there currently doesn't seem to be any way to do
this with a preference switch).

The motif-style scroll bars are cute but too busy. I'll have to play
with it a bit to make good suggestions, but how about a) not putting the
elevator in a trough; just put it on top like the endzones are, and b)
remove the little indentation in the endzone.

Having both pop-up and menubar menus be the default is much nicer than
the either/or of patch 10. Thanks.

Folks, the messages.tpl template defines the global style (used (apparently)
for the bodies of messages, to be 12 point. This is extremely
\bold{\italic{inappropriate}} -- I'm squinting at a 100 dpi display even as I
type this message. I don't see any reason for that template to specify a
point size, either. Please get rid of it.

The "recessed" lettering can be turned off. The scrollbar can also be changed
considerably, it can even be made to mimic the old scrollbar's look with the
new code.

The relevant help files are: preferences, scroll, oscroll, and sbutton. (all
these things are based on the drawing code of sbuttons)

The best I could come up with was

*.SButtonAlwaysInherit: on

*.SButtonLabelBackground: gray75

(I had to match gray75 by eye.) Is this the recommended technique? What if
some application uses a different color button?

To get the elevator out of its rut, I use the following:

*.ScrollBarTopShadow: gray75

*.ScrollBarBottomShadow: gray75

I haven't figured out how to remove the endzones' dimples.

Thanks.  It's better this way.

I guess I don't really understand what you meant. Is it that you want the 3d
look for the button, but don't want the shadow(or recessed) effect on the
text?

\excerptedcaption{Excerpts from internet.other.info-andrew: 27-Jan-92 Re: R5

\quotation{(I had to match gray75 by eye.) Is this the recommended technique?

}
This is the recommended way. Depending on what color the application uses I
suppose the text might look ugly again. In general I wouldn't expect any
application to change the color of the button label, so I suspect it won't be
a problem in practice. (Note that LabelBackground is different from just
Background, one affects just the text of the button, the other the area around
the text.)

I'm afraid there is no way to remove the endzone dimples without removing the
box around them... You could try *.MotifScrollBars: yes (and then
*.ScrollPosition:left if you want it there.) This will give you arrows in the
endzones, but no indication when they are depressed. (I believe this is a
bug.) The label preferences for the endzones can be used to make the arrows
go away.

Hope this helps,

Yes, that's exactly what I want. I don't mind the 3D stuff in general, I just
think you guys got carried away. The text is the best (worst) example; it is
much harder to read with the 3D effect.

A problem I had today was that the border around the elevator turned black
after I ran an image editing program. (I'm running with
*.SButtonLabelBackground: gray75). I know next to nothing about X color
management, but why would the border be the only affected thing when both it
and the elevator are the same color? (I know, it's because they use different
pixel values. But why? Also, why did the image program only smash that one,
and leave all the rest alone?) I'm willing to believe the image program had a
bug, but does ATK have one, too?

We have our first Bellcore user of Andrew under OpenWindows. He doesn't like
the cursors, and I can't say as I blame him. Is there are known fix for this
problem? His cursors are ugly and he gets LOTS of X errors...

Nathaniel,

	Here is the list of messges that I received in sending you this email.

I hope it helps. YOu should also know that the cursors for Andrew look

pretty funky. There is obviously a problem. Let me know what you find

out. In the mean time I will let you know if I find anything else

unusual.

Subject: 2 possible bugs in Andrew

\begindata{text,1506288}

I think I may have hit 2 possible bugs in Andrew system, which I haven't seen
discussed yet.

\description{\italic{\bold{OS}}\italic{\bold{:}} 	SunOS4.1.2

\italic{\bold{CPU}}\italic{\bold{:}} 	Sun 670 MP

\italic{\bold{X11}}\italic{\bold{:}} X11R5 with the first three patches
implemented (yes, I know there are more, I'm waiting for more diskspace on my
system to recompile my X11R5)

\italic{\bold{Andrew}}\italic{\bold{:}}

	Version distributed on X11R5 tape

\italic{\bold{Mail:}}	Configured to use sendmail+IDA. All host, aliases, and
password file validation has been turned off. No White Pages.

\italic{\bold{WM:}}	The window manager I am using at present is the olwm
distributed with XView 3.1 on the X11R5 tape

\bold{Possible bugs:

\italic{messages}}\italic{\bold{:}}

	On some rare occasions I've noticed that when I attempt to strip Andrew
formatting from the message to be sent, the message \italic{may}
\italic{vanish }}without trace.\description{ This is the greatest possible
offence that a mailer can commit. This behaviour is erratic. I noticed it
happen only twice so far. There may have been other cases though which I am
not aware of. I suspect that the message may have vanished because of the
problem with stripping the formatting off it, which might have been
unsuccessful for some reason. The particular situation in which it downed on
me that the message wasn't sent was when I posted a message to a local mailing
list. Since I subscribe to that list, the message should have come back. But
it never did. When I sent the message again later on (also with stripping the
Andrew formatting), the message went through without problems and I got it
back via the mailing list.

	In this case it is feasible that the problem may be elsewhere, but because of
the "gravity of the offence" it may be worthwhile scrutinizing this part of
Andrew in any case.

\italic{\bold{bush:}}	Sometimes, when I iconize \italic{bush}, and then
deiconize it, the large font in \italic{bush}' pushbuttons changes to a very
small one. It looks like \italic{bush} suddenly loses information about the
font it should be using for its widgets. This happens only in the following
circumstances: I have a script called \italic{vitool}, which invokes
\italic{vi} in an \italic{xterm} window via
\literal{"\typewriter{\smaller{xterm -n vi -T vi -e vi $*}}"}. When working
with \italic{bush}, I sometimes change the default editor to \italic{vitool}.
When I invoke that editor from \italic{bush}, then iconize \italic{bush}, and
then deiconize it, it comes back with that very small font in its push
buttons. \italic{\bold{This font looks like one of the small fonts in xterm
(the "tiny" font)!}} \italic{Xterm} has slots for up to 8 fonts and the font
referred to as \italic{tiny} is the font resource known as
\typewriter{\smaller{vt100.font2. }}This, again, may be a server problem
rather than Andrew problem, and it's not as serious as the potential problem
with messages.

}Has anyone encountered similar problems yet?

Regards,

Gustav\

Subject: groff and ATK (2)
Cc: jjc@jclark.com

After a bit of helpful advice from James Clark, the implementor of
groff, I found what I was doing wrong that caused my problems with groff
and my dependence on Adobe Transcript. You will remember that for
formatting my document to PostScript, I was using the formatcommand:

    formatcommand:      cat /tmp/%s.n | /usr/gnu/bin/gpic -D -Tpsc |
    /usr/gnu/bin/gtbl | /usr/gnu/bin/geqn -m2 | /usr/gnu/bin/gtroff -E
    -Tpsc | /usr/transcript/bin/psdit |

Turns out that I can use groff's grops, and remove the dependency on
Transcript psdit, by simply using the following formatcommand:

    formatcommand:      groff -pte -E /tmp/%s.n |

Note: groff, not gtroff. The -pte switches tell it to run gpic, gtbl,
and geqn before running gtroff. The output of gtroff is automatically
piped into grops, which generates the PostScript. (This assumes that
/usr/gnu/bin (or whereever groff is installed) is on one's path.)

The problem with my earlier test was that 1) I was using gtroff with
the wrong macro files, and 2) I had a bogus document (with a tab stop
set at 2.5 miles in (somehow...) !).

Thanks to James for all the help.

Bill

I have been trying to quickly install ATK on the SONY RISC laptop (mips),
using the dec mips configuration files, but have run into problems with
missing include files, no G0 version of the C library, etc. Has any work
been done on this machine? Any recommended strategies for proceeding?

Thanks much in advance; please respond via EMAIL as I don't receive the
group news.

I've never personally seen or heard of this behavior. Anybody else? Of
course, that doesn't mean that it doesn't occur. We had a Sparcstation here
for a while but now that it's gone we need help from those who use Andrew on
the Sparc in supporting that platform.

Nope. It's just plain bad implementation. I plan to remedy that uglyness

Subject: ATK on High Res DECstation

\begindata{text,1697840}
\textdsversion{12}
\template{messages}
We successfully built Andrew, V5, for a DECstation 5000 running Ultrix 4.2.
 Andrew programs run fine on DECstations equipped with standard
monochrome/color graphics hardware, but on machines equipped with
high-resolution TX graphics hardware, Andrew applications dump core upon
startup.

As far as I know, the only software difference between the standard and
high-resolution DECstation machines is that one uses the "Xws" window display
server, while the other uses the "Xtm" window server.

Does the fact that different window servers are used on the two machines mean
that Andrew needs to be built separately for each DECstation 5000 display
type? If not, does anyone have an idea what else might be causing the core
dump problem? (actually, core doesn't dump to a file--Andrew applications
start, then simply vanish.)

Thanks,

Subject: messages & locked files

I've gotten into a strange situation with Messages. There are 69
messages in my ~/Mailbox, which apparently cannot be read in because
"Someone has a directory locked". No idea of who someone is, no
apparent lock files in ~, ~/.Messages, or ~/Mailbox.  Re-starting
messages, cui, etc, doesn't help. Any ideas?

This may be the long-standing bug in xgraphic that we have just tripped over
again with Open Windows 3.0 \bold{\italic{and}} the new SGI X-server (both in
the same week!). The problem is in xgraphic/SetupFillGC(), which seems to
assume that \typewriter{lastFillTile} will always have something of use in it.
 But sometimes, especially when you are just creating the graphic, the value
of \typewriter{lastFillTile} will be NULL.

This is compounded by a less-than-useful assumption in
xgraphic/RealDisplayClass(), which assumes that the first visual on the list
of visuals returned by XGetVisualInfo() is the one to use. Under OW 3.0, the
first visual on the list (with a color display) is a StaticGray (with 8
bitplanes, which is what seems to trigger the SetupFillGC() bug), but the one
we really want to use is, of course, the color visual for the screen.

I'll bet you have /afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/netbb included as part of
your default mail search path. CMU recently blocked this directory from
remote public access. In .preferences, define *.mspath: $mail to
override any defaults that may have been built into your site's
configuration file.
