Thanks for your help. It seems to me that all this could be solved if
im_Destroy cleaned things up properly. That way my application wouldn't
have to assume it's under a frame.

question... Message-Id: <1991Jan8.052741.5984@eng.umd.edu> Sender:
info-andrew-request@andrew.cmu.edu To: info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu

Well, considering that I am working on a Sun4 SunOS4.1, I took this
long before actually deciding to attempt the compile, but now that I
have decided to set forth into the wild wilderness, I have a couple of
questions about some of the variable settings in the sitevars.h file:
o for the _SITE_NON_ANDREW_MAIL variable, there is no single
good setting for this on our system. We have many users, and
about 3-4 different places to keep mail depending on which group
the user falls into. But, we have the MAIL environment variable
set at all times (or it is supposed to be). So, is there any way
to get andrew to use the contents of $MAIL instead of whatever
is set in _SITE_NON_ANDREW_MAIL ? o my other question was as to
whether _SITE_NON_ANDREW_PRINTDIR would be funkified by
mdqs-isms, but I suppose that that worst problem I'd have is
that it won't find anything, and I don't think there's anyway
for it to find jobs unless you're running on the printer's
server. Oh well.
Any help on this/these matters is appriciated, and any general Sun4
SunOS4.1 help as well. Thanks, and I'm sure I'll post more questions
when I hit problems...

We use both MIT X and OpenWindows, we are heading to OpenWindows for the
same reason that you are. We have had one major problem though with
getting Andrew to work properly under OpenWindows.
Note: we only have Andrew patched to No 6 due to the SunOS4.1 problems,
even though No 9 is out we have updated the src yet. Also, our Andrew
was still compiled under MIT X, not OpenWindows.
The problem is related to fonts. Basically, the converted fonts don't
behave exactly like they do under MIT X, it is something to do with
their widths. The problem manifests itself if you run ez on a document,
what happens is that you get places in the text where there should be a
space, however the individual font characters come out too wide and the
space doesn't show. Also if you select a region, the inverted area
doesn't match exactly the area you selected, sometimes starting halfway
through a character.
I have mailed on the andrew mailing list about this before and received
no replies from anyone giving either a solution or expressing that they
have the same problem. It could be just that I am converting the fonts
wrongly, but since I am the only one who has posted on the mailing list
saying what I think you have to do to convert them, I don't know. I even
ftp'd at one point the converted fonts that someone else had made
available, however had exactly the same problem.
On another point, I have also had trouble with Andrew fonts when
converted to MacX. Basically fdbbdf doesn't put enough of the
information expected by some conversion programs, in the bdf file it
creates. This results in the conversion program failing for that font,
or producing a font that doesn't work properly.
Any help with these problems would be appreciated.

I have seen the same sort of thing but not under andrew. I believe that
I converted the fonts correctly but overlapping occurs. I had a thought
that maybe the fonts are the correct size but that the character spacing
and line spacing is different.

As far as I know, there is no MS Word to EZ converter. If there is one,
I'd like to know about it too!
We at MIT are working on an RTF to ez and ez to RTF converter.
We don't expect to be done for a while...

I built the release on an SS2 running 4.1.1 a few days ago with cc -O4
/usr/lib/libm.il, and it's been working like a champ, modulo the same
old problem with the ness stuff. Be prepared to have lots of swap -- O4
feeds the code through iropt, which grows pretty big. 30 meg of swap
wasn't enough to compile setup.c under the console tree -- I had to add
another 20.

The same bombout during the build as reported by jip@helix.nih.gov.

No, I had to delete the tree.

Several times. It doesn't bother me all that much since I've never
mananged to figure out what ness is supposed to be anyway.

We are developing converters between several PC word processors and
ODIF. One of them is for MS-Word. You could combine this converter with
the EZ/ODIF converter (I suppose it will work). Anyway, we are also
working in a new implementation of EZ/ODIF converter.
In this moment, the only available converter we have for MS-Word is for
release 4.0 on MS-DOS for the FOD-11 Document Application Profile (only
text). However, we are working on more versions and more powerful DAPs.
Apart from this, if you are interested in, we have ODIF converters for
WordPerfect and WordStar (for FOD-26 DAP including graphics).
As far as I now, Apple and Bull also have ODIF converters for MS-Word on
Mac and MS-Windows.

We are not having problems compiling the code at PL7 but most programs
would not run. Has anyone successfully got andrew to run as well? What
compile options did you use? Did you try with bsdcc or cc?

To: andrew.cmu.edu!info-andrew@sco.COM Subject: Non-RFC822 -conforming
addresses under AMS
I have to deal with non-RFC822-conforming mailers which generate address
lists separated by whitespace rather than commas. AMS always treats
these address lists as one big name and converts the spaces to dots.
I noticed that there was some code in overhead/mail/lib/parseadd.c to
explicitly deal with this case, but only if there is a parse error
first. Why doesn't a list of whitespace-separated words cause a parse
error?
I'm running the R4 software with patchlevel 8.

At Rochester, we've been running ATK on RS/6000 for some time, no
problems. We use cc and the options provided in the config files for
rs_aix31.
What specific problems are you having?

I have noticed that application_Stop() is not called when an ATK
application is killed by the window manager (or when X dies). It
appears the im_keyboardProcessor() never returns to application_Run(),
but somehow exits deep in the bowels of ATK. It does exit with a bad
status, though.
This is a problem for me, because my application needs to do some
cleanup regardless of how the application is terminated. I can live
with people signaling it will odd signals, but it is real easy for
someone to close an application with the mwm 'close' menu. Anyone have
any workarounds?

instead of using lpair, use bpair. This is a subclass of lpair, which
overrides the update methods to get rid of that line.
It's part of the standard stuff, probably in supportviews or somewhere
like that if you want to hunt up the source.
Documentation... Hah! :-)

It could be that %%BoundingBox is not the problem. It could be that
groff follows a different convention than transcript ditroff for for the
"The following begins/ends raw postscript that is to be passed verbatim
through."
Read the code in atk/text/txttroff.c: txttroff__BeginPS for some clues here.

info-andrew+@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Documentation, ATK on sparc
Well, first off, I think I should apologise about my rash comment on
documentation in my previous posting... I didn't mean to be disparaging
about general docs for andrew. I did, however, spend some time looking
for a beast like it a while ago, and this coloured my comment. (As
pointed out to me by Bill Cattey, my own documentation isn't the best in
the world :-)
But to better things....
I finally managed to ship across the latest ATK PL009 and it all
compiled first time, from scratch, without any errors on a Sun4, running
SunOS 4.1.
Everything I have tested so far has worked perfectly, except for
console, which core dumped on me after a short while. When I feel more
energetic, I'll look into why.
Thanks. Nick Williams. "It's all gone...

The problem with console is that I made a small mistake with the dynamic
loading fixes that went out in patch009. The problem is that the
function gethostbyname is in both runapp and libcx.a. It should only be
in one of those two. You can get by the problem thusly: % cd
/usr/andrew/lib % ar d libcx.a gethostent.o % cd andrew/atk/console;
make Clean % make dependInstall
Let me know if that fixes your problem with console.
Thanks, Gary Keim ATK Group

I don't know of any. Moreover, I believe there are multiple versions of
rmail floating around that actually use completely or partially
different file formats. So the task isn't even well-defined!

A while back I asked a couple of questions regarding some peculiarities
of typescript on our HP9000 systems run hp/ux 7.0. We are now seeing
the same thing on our rs6000s running AIX3.1.
?QUESTION?: have the modifications suggested to me by Todd Inglett
been incorporated in any of the patches???
I've enclosed Todd's comments below. Also, I've checked the tscript.c
code and I didn't see any rs6000 or hp/ux ifdefs that would indicate
that Todd's suggestions have been implemented.
Do the Andrew folks recommend the modifications that Todd suggests?
Also, what #define flags are used to specify the rs6000 arch. type?
I've seen #define IBMR2 in our local config files.

Why don't ATK applications support the -iconic command line option? When
I tried to execute a command with that option my typescript showed the
following.
sendmessage -iconic &
[1] 375 ~> Starting messages (Version 7.14, ATK 15.5); please wait...
Illegal option: '-iconic'--ignored
This option is one that is listed in the X Toolkit Intrinsics
Programming manual as a standard command line option.

It might be nice to have platform specific site.h but it is possible to
hold parameters for several platforms in the one site.h file.
Here is an example of how we do this at MIT:

DEFAULT_ANDREWDIR_ENV /mit/andrew/rt #endif /* _IBMR2 */ #else /*

DEFAULT_ANDREWDIR_ENV /mit/andrew/ps2 #else /* i386_ENV */ #ifdef
PMAX_ENV #define DEFAULT_ANDREWDIR_ENV /mit/andrew/decmips #else /*

collection of .dog files
I've found the .dog files generated during the build process of Andrew
to be quite handy. They'd be even handier if they were collected in
some standard place so that everyone can find them. I'd like to suggest
we create the directory ${ANDREWDIR}/dog/, and put all of them in there
during the install phase.
Comments?

What I'd like to see is some preference/Xdefault like:
*.IconShortTitles: on *.TitleBarShortTitles: on
to apply to any app that might wish to display a filename inside an icon
or a title bar respectively. :)
I would think that this wouldn't be too difficult to implement and would
make ATK even more configurable.

Perhaps there should be another define or two in the config files to say
whether to move them, and if so, where.

(Andrew Dist List) Subject: Another strange WP problem... Cc:
I am presently telling the AMS programs to verify user names via WP,
which I assemble by hand (or at any rate, not manually). Recently, I
found this problem when sending mail to a friend (and potential user) in
CUI:
I enter a To: address of tom.emerson. Upon submission, cui tells me The
name 'Tom Emerson <tree@sadye.uvm.edu>' is ambiguous. It then lists my
alternatives: "Tree,,," (others) <emerson@sadye.uvm.edu> Tom Emerson
(staff) <tree@sadye.uvm.edu>
I, knowing Tree, direct CUI to send it to the second alternative. Wups!
The name 'Tom Emerson <tree@sadye.uvm.edu>' is ambiguous. [and on it goes]
Now since we don't run AMDS (and I'm not sure TPTB can ever be convinced
to do so, unless I can solve problems like this before the Users find
out about them), the only way to get out of this situation is to change
the To: address to point to Tree on another machine.
Now my question is: 1) Would AMDS do the same thing (AAAAUGH!)? 2)
How can I solve this, preferably without deleting the other account
manually from WP (or changing the nickname)?
As a side issue, is it possible to get the WP-ized version of finger?

Is that a case of "it doesn't require me to do X-specific stuff", or "it
doesn't *permit* me to do X-specific stuff"?
There's no way to do some things in Andrew that can be done in X *and*
in some other window systems atop which it might be placed (you can't
ring the display station's bell, you can't say "please map the 'left
arrow' key into the following procedure" - yes, you can bind something
to the H19 escape sequence that emerges from the "im" layer, but I don't
know of any way offhand to, say, make a VTXXX-emulating "tm", 'cuz the
arrow keys get translated to H19 escape sequences at a fairly low level
- etc.).
>One of those useful things is of course the inability to cut/paste >>
between X and Andrew applications without playing special tricks ?? :-(
What sort of problems have you seen? There was a bug in the handling of
large cuts&pastes due to not handling the ICCCM INCR property stuff
correctly, but that got fixed in PL9; when I was doing the fix, I
managed to do cuts and pastes between "ez", "textedit" (yes, that *is*
an X application, now), and "xedit" - I did have to cook up some
translations for "xedit", in order to get it to use the clipboard, but
that was more of a problem for XView applications such as "textedit"
rather than for Andrew. Return-path:

Just to add more confustion, how about adding options to the proposed
*.ShortIconNames so that it could take values:
yes: always strip off path no: never strip off path (or add ~ maybe?)
user: always try to append ~user/ if it's in some users directory
or ~/ for user's home directory (for you, it'd be likely
~source/...)

When my window manager (motif on AIX 3.1) iconifies, it always is a
rectangle of the same size, and the icon title is truncated on the
right. When I move my cursor into the icon, then the title expands to
whatever size it needs. I assume that twm does not do this (It's been
tooo long since I've used twm)?
I do like the idea of having the icon title separate from the titlebar
text (loosely coupled, I guess).

I believe I did something wrong when configuring the andrew toolkit. But
I can not figure out what it was.
I am trying to bring the andrew toolkit patchlevel 9 up on a sun 3/280
and assorted diskless workstations running sun OS 4.1. The compile of
the toolkit went fine. But the andrew clients are not reading the fonts
correctly or something of that sort and the fonts that they display are
very wrong.
The version of X11 we are running is X11R4 at patchlevel 18.
for example running console and selecting read new console file from the
menu a question that looks something like this:
T (small square)e curre*t (diamond)(small circle)*s(small circle)le is [....
If anyone has an idea of what I did wrong or what I should do to fix it
I would be thankful. If you have any questions just ask.
Thanks in advance Glenn Case

Subject: HELP - installation problem on DECstation 2100 - ULTRIX 4.1 To:
info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Date: Thu, 31 Jan 91 17:12:55 EST X-Mailer:
ELM [version 2.3 PL5]
Howdy,
I'm attempting to install andrew on a DECstation 2100 running ULTRIX
4.1, and everything seems to be going well until the build process gets
to processing the 'environ.*' files in the 'atk/basics/common'
directory.
At which point I get the following errors:
doload: Undefined symbol: sys_errlist doload: Errors while processing
doindex: NULL entrypoint from environ.do...program terminated!
The build stops here and I can't figure out what is wrong. I've checked
the 'overhead/class/machdep/dec_mips/...' stuff and find that
'getlist.awk' is asking for the definer of sys_errlist. I've checked my
libc_G0.a (I'm on a MIPS system) and there is NO definer of sys_errlist.
Any suggestions on where to go from here? Help would be much appreciated.

The subject says most of it. I was wondering if anyone had gotten the
andrew toolkit running on a Sequent Symmetry. If so could you send me
the changes. If not do you have any recomendations on where to start the
porting effort. Thanks in advance Glenn Case

I found the problem after the above suggestion. Somehow I had fouled up
when installing the fonts.alias file and andyoffice12 was being used as
the default font. Thanks for the help. (lots and lots of thanks)

Howdy,
I'm trying to install Andrew on a DECstation 2100 running ULTRIX and all
was going well until the compilation of environ.c in atk/basics/common.
At whick point I get the following error: doload: Undefined symbol:
sys_errlist doload: Errors while processing doindex: NULL entrypoint
from environ.do...program terminated!
Needless to say, the build stops at this point. I've checked by
everything I can think of, and am at wit's end.
I would appreciate any help from those who've successfully installed
Andrew in a DECstation/ULTRIX environment.
Reply here OR (preferably) via email to:

Thanks.
