As described in the O'Reilly - X Window System Administrators Guide -
this is a bug du to your implementation of 'cpp', try to use that of the
MIT-Implementation of X11. (I don't know actually the path, try a 'find'
;-).
Hope this helps. c u Chris Wiersch wiersch@uni-trier.de Return-path:

There exists an RFC describing how to represent Non-ASCII text in mail
headers (RFC1342).<nl> <nl> Is there any work going on to
implement this into messages/AMS or could anyone point out where to put
in code to do this. I.e. I'd like to see headers sent as:<nl> <nl>
<leftindent>Subject: =3D?ISO-8859-1?Q?Svenska bokst=3DE4ver i
datorpost?=3D</leftindent><nl> be viewed as<nl>
<leftindent>Subject: Svenska bokst=E4ver i datorpost<nl> <nl>
</leftindent>Of course, the reverse translation, i.e. when
sending mail, should preferably work too.<nl> I tried to hack this in,
but failed. I probably did it at the wrong place. AMS is somewhat opaque
an untrained hacker like me.<nl>

Multiple charsets are allowed in a single header.
Last time I looked at the MIME support, I came to the conclusion that
the font subsystem needs to have a 'charset' attribute added to font
names.

Subject: andrew on solaris X-Sun-Charset: US-ASCII content-length: 952

Are there system.mcr files for building andrew on solaris? The FAQ's
and core distribution do not seem to indicate so.
Is it possible to just get ez and all associated software (ezprint,
ez2ps, ez2ascii) without the rest of andrew? It also doesn't seem so,
with the runapp setup.
Is there an ez2tex or ez2latex program?
Thanks,
Kevin Otto Dept. of Mech. Eng. MIT
p.s.: I tried running the sunos4.1 binaries on solaris 2.3. I defined
the ANDREWDIR and other variables per the instructions, and it seems to
work partially. ez comes up, for example, but it doesn't have fully
functionality (print does't work, etc.). ezprint also fails:
doload: Error finding entry point of package
"/usr/local/andrew/dlib/atk/ ezprinta.do" - ld.so.1: ezprint: fatal:
dlsym: can't find symbol ezprinta pp__GetClassInfo runapp: Error
loading the application ezprintapp.
The file is there, so it seems to be some sort of incompatibility with
ld.so? hmm.

Release 6.2 coming up in a couple of months should have some chance of
working with some version of solaris 2.x. But there have been a number
of bugs in the solaris dynamic loading which may prevent ATK from
working under some versions.

See the README.ez. (It may be somewhat out of date in the last public
release, I'm not sure.) It can be obtained via anonymous ftp to
emsworth.andrew.cmu.edu in the top level. It is possible to avoid
compiling much of ATK my changing the site.h file, e.g.:
#undef MK_BLD_BLKS #undef MK_BASIC_UTILS #undef MK_BASIC_INSETS #undef
MK_HELP /* #undef MK_TEXT_EXT you probably actually do want MK_TEXT_EXT,
this gets you the C editing modes along with other languages and the
style editor lookz */ #undef MK_AUTHORING #undef MK_AUX_UTILS #undef
MK_AUX_INSETS #undef MK_EXAMPLES #undef MK_METAMAIL #undef MK_JPEG
#undef MK_TIFF #undef AMS_ENV #undef CONTRIB_ENV
This should avoid compiling nearly everything which is optional.

No, I'm afraid not. Some students working under Bill Cattey at mit have
been working on conversions to and from rtf, but aside from that the
only available conversions are to troff and postscript via troff.

+1100 From: Bob Smart <smart@mel.dit.csiro.au>
I am trying to get the binary Linux version of Andrew going. I gather it
is based on a beta version of 6.1.
I have two problems with messages. Firstly when I start it it complains
that it can't read ~/Mailbox.
Secondly when I go to send a mail message it says the reciepient is not
valid: even if the recipient is myself or root.
I've tried setting all the AndrewSetup things that seem relevant and
that are documented in the help. I can give more information to anyone
who thinks they might be able to help. The Linux system is the debian
beta distribution. The mail seems very simple and standard.
I found a program called eatmail and it says "can't copy mail from
/usr/spool/mail/smart to ~/Mailbox". I can't see why not.
Another problem is that the "bigger" font is horrible and blocky and
that probably means I need to get some extra font stuff from somewhere.
Any advice appreciated .. I said I'd talk about Andrew at a local Linux
meeting and I'd like to get the messages program going :-).

Hmm, it should get created when you run messages.

This is a known bug, we think it may be fixed in our latest sources. We
don't have a linux machine though so we can't test it ourselves. The
latest sources should be released within a couple months.

I don't know why this would be. I can't find where this message is
coming from in our eatmail.c. You shouldn't need eatmail, if AMS was
compiled without RUN_AMDS_ENV defined messages should be able to read
your mail in from /usr/spool/mail/smart. (Note though that it will read
ALL your mail out of there and into an AMS mail folder.)

You might be able to turn off font scaling in the X server. I suppose
ATK could be hacked to provide a option to avoid using scaled fonts, but
this would preclude using Type1 or Speedo fonts as well.

This error message usually indicates that the local mail program is
running with the "set hold" user option. Setting "unset hold" in a
~/.mailrc file should fix this.

I run Andrew under Solaris. (I co-authored the port to it.)
The problem I had running SunOS binaries under Solaris 2.1 was that the
binary compatibility library did not support the old SunOS libdl which
dynamically loaded a.out format files.
My guess is that the much touted improvements to binary compatibility
under Solaris 2.3 don't include libdl with a.out. **ANY** use of ATK
that requires dynamic object loading therefore fails.
Someone said that AUIS version 6.2 will run under some versions of
Solaris. Let me say what exactly the problem is:
The libdl under Solaris 2.1 had a bug that broke dynamic loading for
large applications like AUIS. That is fixed in Solaris 2.2 and later.
Since you are running Solaris 2.3, I expect you will have ABSOLUTELY NO
TROUBLE running the 6.2 version of AUIS.
