This may be related, it might not be (esp. since the dump didn't happen
inside of XDrawLines()), but shouldn't that magic number 5 inside
(SRCDIR/atk/basics/x/xgraphic.c)xgraphic__DrawTrapezoids() be 4? And
from a purely aesthetic point of view, the thought of a malloc/free
every single time an atomic graphic is drawn really bugs me.

Hi,
I'm trying to create a Postscript output file from an object created
with 'org' using 'ezprint' as shown in the following script:
ezprint -t $FILENAME | eqn -Tpsc | ditroff -Tpsc | psdit > $OUTFILE

I get the following error message:
Malloc arena corruption discovered at - fr
Anyone out there have an idea why this is happening and perhaps a patch?
TIA.

Hello,
I have been using Andrew for some time and have been trying ADEW and
multimedia.
Up until now, I haven't experimented with color, though.
My question is: To what extent does Andrew support color ?
1. Can I create multi-color buttons and icons ? 2. Can I create
multi-colored text, the same way different fonts are selected ? 3. Are
there plans to make FAD and ZIP support color ?
Thank you in advance

We have a couple of users here who run Andrew under OpenWindows.
Recently, they upgraded from OW 2.1 to OW 3.0. At this point, Andrew
(the R5 release) ceases to be able to work -- windows get opened, but
are closed almost immediately with a core dump.
Does anyone have any experience with Andrew under OW 3.0? I'm not an
OpenWindows user myself, and I'm not really even sure where to begin
figuring this one out... -- Nathaniel Return-path:

info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: messages folders catch strange
communicable disease!
Has anyone else seen the following problem with messages?
I have a lot of folders into which incoming mail is placed automatically
by a flames program. Sometimes a folder will get 'sick'. When new mail
is placed into it, 'messages' knows about it, but it will always
position me at the first message in the folder, even though all the
previous (hundreds) of messages have been read. Messages knows this
too, because it shows check marks, rather than the little unopened
envelope before each message.
Sometimes a 'cui reconstruct' command seems to fix a folder for a while,
sometimes it has no effect. This disease seems to spread, as more of
my folders are catching it. Help!
Thanks, Bill Schell AT&T Bell Labs, Murray Hill, NJ bill@allegra.att.com

After one and a half day I finished building andrew more or less.
Unfortunately there remain still 2 errors to fix:
  1) mkfontdir doesnt seem to like the generated .pcf font-files 2)
the creation of the helpindex fails, because the following line in the
Makefile demands a pgm or script with a non-existant path on my
local machine:
/afs/andrew.cmu.edu/usr0/hm99/index/installandyindex."sun4_41" $(DESTDIR
(I couldnt find something like installandyindex... or similar
among the distributed and generated files)
The first error seems not to affect the possibility of starting
applications, while the second prevents me - as a novice - using andrew.
When browsing through this newsgroup I read about patches which could
help completing the installation. I would appreciate if someone could
send me these patches or give me some other hints to succeed (email:
ziegler@gmdzi.gmd.de).
I built andrew on a sun4 with os 4.1.1.

I am having trouble with the messages tool. It is not correctly parsing
incoming mail. Many messages are smashed together into one large mail
message. There is a pattern: all the messages that are not treated
seperately have a From line similar to:

Perhaps a better question would be why is AMS putting out this
(deprecated) form of address in the first place? It doesn't add any
information not already present in the Received: headers, and Host
Requirements says that hosts SHOULD NOT (I think that's their wording)
emit source-routed addresses, and other hosts MAY completely ignore
source-routing.

Help!

The problem is that the COLORPRINTINGWORKS code uses the Ca and Cz
macros which are not implemented in tmac.atk. The further problem is
that to work properly these macros must insert postScript code at an
arbitrary point in troff output. Some troffs have not had a good
mechanism to do this interspersal and the method used for rasters is too
buggy for printing color text.
(If someone knows a general solution for interspersing postScript in
troff output, I'd be delighted to hear of it.)

We have implemented an automount map called /tilde. While "cleaning" up
my preferences to accomodate R5 I changed my mspath to
/tilde/macdonal/.MESSAGES from ~/.MESSAGES. Now, we haven't finished
cleaning up our passwd database so for me ~ == /net/ra/ra/macdonal
rather than /tilde/macdonal.
The next time I fired up messages it proceded to write a new .AMS.prof
using /tilde/macdonal/.MESSAGES/mail for mail.  Unfortunately,
MS_FindMailbox expands ~/Mailbox, CUI_CheckMailboxes wants
.MESSAGES/mail and Mailbox to be in the same directory, and as far as
strncmp() is concerned /net/ra/ra/macdonal != /tilde/macdonal.
So, if you run into users who complain "Read Mail doesn't do anything!"
Take a look at where their .AMS.prof thinks mail is vs. where ~/Mailbox
is.
CUI_CheckMailboxes will dutifully complain if MS_FindMailbox loses, but
won't for this path conflict. Any ideas why not?

First, of course, is to point out that Andrew has adopted much of the
Motif look and feel.
But I take your note to mean you want to reimplement an application
using the Motif library and want to avoid the pure C environment of
Motif.
There are three major contenders for object oriented programming in
Unix: C++, Modula-3, and Objective C. Many sites are adopting C++,
despite the advantages of Modula-3. Objective C has not been gaining
ground despite its use on Next systems. I'm not aware of Motif
libraries for any of these, but I suspect they exist.
Among the advantages of Modula-3 is automatic storage management (via
garbage collection), a feature capable of saving up to 25% of programmer
time on sizeable O-O projects.
At this writing a group (other than the Consortium) is building a layer
on top of ATK so ATK objects can be accessed from Modula-3. Thus new
code could be written in Modula-3 while utilizing the ATK core written
in C. The ATK Consortium hopes to be able to make this code available
later this year. (Consortium members will get it earlier than
non-members.)

I am still in the process of installing ATK version 5.0.0 But I got to

The ATK ends up looking funny and unreabable where is tries to use color
and the 3D shapes. But it looks great on a color monitor which
unfortunately is not what I going to display it on. Any suggestions ?
I am compiling it on Sparcstation 1 with SunOS 4.1.1

Here at MIT we compile Andrew for multiple hardware platforms. I work
pretty hard to keep things tuned so when we add a new hardware platform
we don' consume space with redundant copies of doc files, etc. When the
RS/6000 port came on-line, I hacked makedo.csh so that the .do files
would be about the same size as those on the other platforms. Before my
change, the .do files contained all the symbols, and were the
traditional size of the .dog files.
Well look at these numbers reported by du:
rt/dlib/atk: 7299 rt/bin: 5676 vax/dlib/atk: 4914 vax/bin: 3714
rsaix/dlib/atk: 8961 rsaix/bin: 5828 sparcsun/dlib/atk: 26562
sparcsun/bin: 4207
All of these numbers make sense except for the sparcsun/dlib/atk size.
(The RISC binaries are a little bigger, except where shared libraries
render them smaller again.)
My first idea was to, as with the RS/6000, strip the .do files. Alas,
Sun strip is mondo stupid copared to AIX strip which has a PHD in symbol
tables from Austin Texas.
AIX strip is smart enough to reduce the symbol table size without
destroying the data required to perform run-time loading.
Sun stripped .do files provide me with the helpful Core Dump of EZ when
run-time loaded.
One possibility is for me to compile the Sun platform without -g. I am
loathe to do this. I generally keep around the .dog files and use them
for debugging. I distribut the .do files to campus, and the
pedagogically correct way to do this all is for there to be separate
.dog files.
Does anybody know how to tell SunOS to reduce the size of the symbol
table without throwing out the baby with the bathwater?

Well I have been trying to make the scroll bars look right on the
monochrome monitor. There seem to be so many preferences related to
scrollbar and I just cannot seem to get the right combination of black &
white & foreground and background!
Will please anybody tell me what are ALL the various components of the
scrollbars and which options affect which parts. I have looked at the
scroll.help file. It did not help.
There is matte, there is button, there is elevator, there is dot, the
bar itself, scroll etc..etc...And each of them have shadow,
foreground,background... I tried MimicOld option that gave variable
results. Everytime I start the app the bars look different..Boy!
I need somebody to exactly describe to me what is what and which options
should I set to make it look like the most simple scrollbar (a white
slider on a grey bar, like xterms under twm)
And for ITC people. It would be nice if you include a explanatory
diagram of scrollbar in your scroll.help file..
I have been struggling with this problem so long that it is getting to me..
If I do not get help I have to give up on ATK I guess.

Hello,
I tried using the eroff package release 3.0.7A on SCO 3.2.2.
I used : troff -Tps file | eps - | lp
I didn't get any error messages, but the resulting file was empty of text.
My question:
1. Any more clues on where to look for the bug ?
2. Since I don't intend to buy another package, can I use groff instead ?
Thank you

I'm having a few problems with fonts and scrollbars under Andrew rel.
5.0. I've just put up release 5.0 under Openwindows 3.0. I had Andrew
PL10 running before under Openwindows 3.0, so I'm just fighting the
differences between PL10 and 5.0 (and maybe X11R4 to X11R5 changes).
First, my fonts are a bit screwed up. I have /usr/andrew/xnwsfnts in my
fontpath, so my cursors are right, but my Menus and Menubars have a
tiny fixed width font in them and changing the requisite font
preferences doesn't help. Also, the variable width fonts in messages,
help, etc. all have a wide interline spacing that I don't like.
Second, the new scrollbars look fine on my color display, but none too
good on my monocrome display. Setting *.MimicOldScrollbar: TRUE doesn't
help.
I've included a raster picture that shows all of these problems below.
It's the top of this sendmessage window.
Has anyone out there solved these problems already?

Moving from our old (pl7) ATK to the new 5.0.0 release, we have more
than once been fouled up by messages. It gets into a state where
neither the new or old messages can file new messages from the ~/Mailbox
file into ~/.MESSAGES/mail (or, indeed, ~/.MESSAGES/<anything>). It
seems to be caused by having an instance of the old pl7 messages running
at the same time as you start the new 5.0.0 messages. A fix (which I
don't understand) seems to be to use cui to "rebuild ~/.MESSAGES".
Does anyone have any notion of what's going on here, and how we could
avoid it?

I usually print ez documents (without any raster, etc..) by using the
following command.
ezprint -t filename|troff -Tpsc -t|lpr -t -
and it works..
Now I am trying to do printing from the menus of ez, help, etc..
So I put the following lines in my ~/.preferences file:
formatcommand: ezprint -t /tmp/%s.n|troff -Tpsc -t| printcommand: lpr -t -
The output has the desired bodyfont (which I specified to be andy10).
But the troff commands do not seem to get processed. They come out
printed along with the rest of the text !!!
any suggestion ?

Please excuse me if this has been covered before. I'm building Andrew

I'm having a problem building 5.0.0 on a Sun 4 running 4.1.1 SunOS.
Doindex always exits with the message "...dlopen: stub interception

Any ideas????? I'm poking around here sort of lost. I'm not really
familiar with Andrew at all to begin with and I'm not quite sure exactly
how this dynamic linking stuff is supposed to work either.
Oh, bu the way, the core is over 8MB which strikes me as kinda wierd for
a small littel progream that doesn't malloc anything that looks liike ti
would be huge.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!
Thanks!!!!!!

Basically, we somehow lost our feed (or something -- things weren't
being forwarded into my Mailbox like usual) and I just thought, "Hey,
everything must be OK. No news, is good news." So, I was busy working
away on the CD-ROM distribution without a clue. How naive I can

Make *VERY* sure that *NONE* of the commands that link *ANY* programs
that use the "-ldl" library have "-L/lib" or any other weird "-L"
options; if they do, the system may find "libdl.so.1.0" in "/lib" rather
than in "/usr/lib", and if it does, it gets *VERY* confused. (Don't ask
why. Trust me. You *DON'T* want to know how that stuff works, or why
it *ONLY* works if it finds "libdl.so.1.0" in "/usr/lib". Really.)

Dynamically linked programs in SunOS 4.x produce very large core files,
although the files have a hole in them so they don't take up as much
disk space as they'd appear to (unless you copy them, in which case the
hole gets filled in). X-Andrew-WideReply: netnews.comp.soft-sys.andrew

Yes. I take responsibility for this project. You will be able to have
color, and greyscale, images in your ATK documents (or anywhere else
insets are allowed) in the future. A prototype implementation exists
but is not yet ready for prime time.
Fred Hansen, the Consortium director, will answer your other questions.

info-andrew@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: problems with scrollbar appearence
on monochrome displays (with rel. 5)
I've solved the problem of the new Motif scrollbars appearing strangely
on my monochrome display. Several people suggested that the problem
might be caused by Foreground/Background color settings on the
monochrome display, but this wasn't the case. I fixed the problem by
setting "Scrollstyle: 3" explicitly. The documentation states that
MimicOldScrollbar is true by default for monochrome screens. It also
states that when this is true that Scrollstyle defaults to 3. I've
found the latter statement to be untrue. Even with MimicOldScrollbar
set to TRUE explicitly, my scrollbars are screwed up unless I also set
Scrollstyle to 3. Can someone at ITC fix this or the documentation?
Bill Schell bill@allegra.att.com AT&T Bell Labs, Murray Hill, NJ
PS:
The new scrollbars look great on a color screen, but ScrollStyle: 3
looks pretty plain. It would be nice if there was something prettier
for monochrome displays. Return-path:

Yes. I take responsibility for this project. You will be able to have
color, and greyscale, images in your ATK documents (or anywhere else
insets are allowed) in the future. A prototype implementation exists
but is not yet ready for prime time.
Fred Hansen, the Consortium director, will answer your other questions.

Could someone please tell me how to insert text into a reply to a
message after excerpting the body of the message, without it appearing
with the same italicized font ? This seems to work ok if there is a
blank line between paragraphs, but if you want to make a comment in the
middle of a paragraph and hit return a couple of times, the text that
you then insert is always italicized. This isn't too well described.
Does anyone know what I'm on about and have a solution please ? This has
been irritating me for a while !

Not anymore. You have led me to one of the more interesting bugs of my
career, and a fix for it is now checked into our source tree. Hopefully,
before long you will see a release of the fixed software.
The symptom was that certain Messages preferences, including AMSHome,
PersonalMailCollectionCommand, and others, were not being found if they
appeared as "messages.AMSHome" in the preferences file. (They worked
fine in the form "*.AMSHome".) The fix involves four lines in two files
in andrew/atkams/messages/lib -- amsn.c and msgsa.c. Here are the
context diffs:

===================================================================
Here's a discussion of the bug, if you're interested:
The preferences-reading code is in libutil.a, in a function called
"getprofile" (which calls "GetConfig"). A global character buffer
called ProgramName is exported by libutil, but most people don't know
that. The environ ATK class is linked with libutil and has procedures
for setting and getting the program name, corresponding directly to the
ProgramName buffer in libutil. ATK applications use the
environ_GetProfile* interface to the getprofile functions in libutil.
So far, so good. The amsn class in Messages is also linked with
libutil, as well as with libcui and libmssrv. Amsn calls
CUI_Initialize, which calls MS_Initialize, which is in libmssrv, which
calls getprofile, which is in libutil, and which requires the
ProgramName buffer. So when amsn is linked, the .do file includes its
own copy of the ProgramName buffer. When Messages is running, (at
least) two of the classes that are loaded -- environ and amsn -- have
their own copies of the ProgramName buffer. Messages calls
im_SetProgramName, which calls environ_SetProgramName, which fills in
environ's copy of ProgramName; and most of the preferences read during
Messages' execution are read via the environ_GetProfile* interface.
However, some preferences are read during startup by the code in
libmssrv, which knows about amsn's (uninitialized) copy of ProgramName
and not about environ's copy. So any preferences read by non-ATK code
-- namely libmssrv (and others) -- will have a bogus value for
ProgramName, and won't find "messages.foo". The workaround is simply to
ensure that amsn's copy of ProgramName is initialized with the
appropriate value, just as environ's copy is.

If you want to put it in the middle of a paragraph that does NOT have
line breaks. you'll have to explicitly choose "plainer" on the affected
text. If you're at the beginning of a line which is preceded by a hard
line break. the right thing should happen.
Right now, Messages wraps an "excerpt" style around each LINE of
excerpted text, which produces the behavior you see. Using the style
mechanism, the only way I could imagine to fix this would be to put a
separate style around each CHARACTER, which would be incredibly wasteful
(not to mention producing an exceedingly ugly datastream, which will
matter more in Messages 8.X, where the datastream will be read by lots
of non-Andrew software and occasionally even by human beings).
An alternate approach would be to rebind all the text-insertion keys to
do something different if they're in the middle of an excerpt. This
could be done, but it would be a lot of work.... For now, I suggest
using "plainest" to get your text out of the excerpt style. --
