Welcome to the Pennsic War from Lord Bleiddian ab Cynin, Captain General of the
Eastern Archers and War Archery Marshal for Pennsic XXIII.
Archery
Archery will remain much the same as it has in previous years. Once again, the Archery War points will consist of the Clout, Advancing Warrior and the Archery Champions Tourney. We will also be offering a vast number of other activities on the range. Novelty Tourneys are scheduled throughout the week and there is a large amount of time set aside for practice shooting. As with last year, we will be running three separate ranges at all times. Another range will also be provided for axe and knife throwing. There will be a schedule of archery events posted at the tent located on the archery range.
We ask that all persons that intend to shoot at the war follow a few simple rules to help us keep the range safe and orderly.
By reading and understanding the rules, you can avoid delays when you come to the range.
- Range Rules:
- All bows, strings and shafts must be inspected by the marshallate before they are used on the range. It is strongly suggested that you have your equipment inspected before the War Points begin in order to avoid delays. An inspection area will be set up in the front of the range tent and will be staffed from 9:00am-5:00pm throughout the war. Certain marshals will be permitted to perform in-camp inspections. In order to have an inspection performed, you should bring your bow (preferably unstrung), string and shafts with you. If your equipment passes, the marshal will place a sticker on the front of your bow. The marshal will write his/her badge number on the top of the sticker and your number will be written below the marshal's. During the War Points, the badge number on the sticker will be compared to the number on the badge of the archer. This will ensure that bows are not being used more than once. Due to this, each bow should be brought to the inspection by the archer that will be using it for the War Points. If your bow fails inspection, you will be permitted to borrow another archer's bow. This is the only case in which the sharing of bows is allowed.
- As referred to above, each bow may only be used once for the Clout War Point and once for the Advancing Soldier War Point. Therefore, the sharing of a single bow between two or more people is forbidden. Any person found to be intentionally violating this rule will not be permitted to shoot for the rest of the war. Any points scored by the archer will be deducted and the matter will be brought to the attention of the Crowns of the East and Middle. An exception to this rule will be granted in cases of equipment failure.
- Each person is permitted to shoot the Clout War Point once and the Advancing Warrior War Point once during the war. They need not be shot in any particular order or even on the same day. The marshals at the range will mark each archer's badge to indicate participation in each of the shoots. Any person found to be intentionally violating this rule will not be permitted to shoot for the rest of the war. Any points scored by the archer will be deducted and the matter will be brought to the attention of the Crowns of the East and Middle.
- The marshallate is required to staff the range from 9:00am-5:00pm Sat.13th through Sat. 20th. As a courtesy to the archers, shooting is permitted during other times, but only when there are a sufficient number of marshals willing to operate the range. Whenever the range is open, the marshals will signal such by raising a large yellow flag over the range tent. If you wish to shoot during off hours, look for the flag. If it is not raised you can save yourself a long walk. You may also bring your own marshals to the range. Please remember that during unscheduled hours, the marshals are there on their own time and are not required to open the range for you.
- Never nock an arrow or load a crossbow until told to do so by the marshals. When you are on the line and ready to shoot, hold a shaft in the air in front of you to signify such. When you are finished shooting, set down your bow and step back from the line.
- Please listen to the marshal's instructions and refrain from talking while he or she is speaking. Even if you are familiar with the rules, those around you may not be and need to be able to hear. Also, while you are on the range, please be considerate of those shooting. Loud conversations and noises are a distraction to those on the line, and should be kept away from the shooting areas.
- No one may tell you where your shafts are landing while you are on the shooting line.
- Please report any problems you may experience on the range directly to one of the Range Marshals. You will be able to identify them by the blue baldric with the gold arrow on it. These marshals are the representatives of the Kingdom Archery Officers and should be able to resolve any situation immediately.
- NOVELTY TOURNEYS
- Tournaments will be sponsored throughout the week by various groups and individuals.
- Archers who wish to compete in these tourneys should check the schedule that will be posted at the range tent.
- Details regarding each shoot will be available at the tent.
- These tourneys will occur at 11:00am, 1:30pm & 4:00pm Sat. 13th - Tue. 16th, and at 12:00 noon & 3:00pm Thur. 18th - Sat. 20th.
- There are no Novelty Tourneys scheduled for Wed. 17th due to the Archery Champions Tourney.
- MARSHALS
The archery at Pennsic requires a vast amount of effort on the part of the marshallate. Your help is greatly appreciated. The operation of the range for 8 days requires well over 800 man hours. Each archery marshal is requested to perform at least two hours of range duty. More is greatly encouraged. One of the first things you should do upon arriving at the war is visit the range tent and sign in. There will be a schedule located there, so you may plan your range duty around the rest of your activities. The schedule will be set up around one hour time slots, so that no one person will be required to spend too much time in the sun.
On behalf of the archery marshallate, I hope you find your time on the range enjoyable and I look forward to seeing you all.
