The Descent of Man, and Other Stories
By Edith Wharton
This collection appeared in book form in two distinct editions, both
published in 1904. The Macmillian edition had ten stories; the Scribner's
edition had nine (omitting "The Letter"). The two collections also ordered
the stories differently; below I use the ordering of the larger Macmillan
edition.
The links below go to on-line
illustrated editions of the stories
as they appeared in magazine form.
They may be somewhat different from the
way they were published in book form.
- The Descent of Man (Scribner's, 1904)
- The Other Two (Collier's Weekly, 1904)
- Expiation (Cosmopolitan, 1908)
- The Lady's Maid's Bell (Scribner's, 1902)
- The Mission of Jane (Harper's Monthly, 1902)
- The Reckoning (Harper's Monthly, 1902)
- The Letter (Harper's Monthly, 1904)
- The Dilettante (Harper's Monthly, 1903)

This is a "meta-book", which stitches together separate files elsewhere
on the Web as they appeared in a previously published book. It is
