Thank you for visiting our pages. Please add comments to this guestbook...
Remember that Xavier is only online 2 to 4 pm EST (19:00 to 21:00 GMT) on weekdays with odd-numbered dates (i.e., alternating weeks of M-W-F and T-Th) and that this schedule may vary somewhat to allow Xavier to assist in other research. All obvious spams to this guestbook will be deleted. Media enquiries, please contact us directly.
First time to this web page. I will try and remember the dates that he is on line

I am visitor number 202960 to the webpage http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~xavier/. I asked him a couple of months ago to go to a certain room and tell a knock-knock joke. He did. That's a pretty cool robot. I'm impressed. Does he learn about his environment as he moves through it?

What about supplementing Xavier's probalistic positioning with GPS positioning? Is GPS too imprecise to help him get around the building? What if Xavier decides to run away from home and join the army to be all that he can be? In that case wouldn't you want to outfit him with a high tech compass? I know he is still young and doesn't get out of the house much, but someday he'll need to find his way around this big, ole world and wouldn't he be better off with a GPS receiving unit to help guide his way? He could even use it to help him catch a fish like other fishermen once he gets out of the army. Give him a hug for me. -Cal

I am a temp in CALD. Xaviar has visited me several times. I carried on a short conversation with the help of his assistant Greg. It would be fun to have a keypad accessible to the public so we can interact with him without the intervention of a human. I find it most fascinating and want to visit the lab soon.

Why did XAVIER go ACROSS the ROAD ?

. . . because Bill Gates was buying up ALL the
Robots on this side of the road.

. . . because Bill Gates went over to that side.

. . . because Microsoft was being attacked by the
Feds on this side of the road.

. . . because Isaac Asimov was on the other side
of the road.

. . . because HAL 9000 was on the other side of
the road.

. . . because there was a cute little Pentium III
on the other side of the road.

Why did XAVIER "NOT" go ACROSS the ROAD ?

. . . because NO ONE told XAVIER to go across the road !

. . . because XAVIER's fragmentary sparking turnover ratio in the integrated wiring of the Secondary Propulsion Unit rebooted without the Server bandwith confirming the operational timing relay circuitry as a Shutdown on the wangle gears.

. . . because XAVIER is afraid of roads.

How can you tell the difference between XAVIER and
his Programmers ?

XAVIER is the one without a pen pocket protector.
XAVIER is NOT wearing tennis shoes.
XAVIER is the one who doesn't make mistakes.
XAVIER is the one with the great personality.
XAVIER is the one with friends.
XAVIER is the one with a steady girl friend.
XAVIER is the one with clean socks.
XAVIER is the one without a Robot to do his work.

Thanks ! ! !

Oh, by the way, does XAVIER do Windows ?
Window '98, I mean !

I saw a robot similar to what you are working on that was used in the Trippler's Army Hospital in Hawaii. It was used to transport medical drugs to the different floors. It was quite amusing! One time as I was doing work on an Air Con duct that had me on a ladder blocking the entrance to the elevator, the robot proceeded to bump the ladder I was standing on to the side. All the while saying "Excuse me you are in my way." I think your team's research is very exciting, and will find lots of use in all kinds of fields of work!!!

I am positively drunk with power at the prospect of bossing your robot around. Great idea. Can you outfit him with a bazooka or something? I think that the undergraduate lounge could use some redecorating. Zave yer lives! I've had enough of you puny humans!

I am a math teacher at Powell High School and am interested in the robot workings for my students to get some idea of three dimension graphing. I really think that this would be great for them to give a shot to and see if they can get it to move to different places or locations. I also have an e-mail address at school. It is rjkost@park1.k12.wy.us - if you could drop me a note telling me what you think of my idea and other ideas that you may have for me to work with three dimension graphing I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for all you do.

Has anyone the project considered the concept of 'battling robots'? Here's what I mean: mount laser tag receivers and 'guns' on two or more robots and and allow them to be remote controlled. 'Players' would be awarded points, play-backs of the 'game' would be available, tournements held, etc., etc.
It could be sort of a cross between Q-Zar laser tag and Mech Warrior, all done over the web, using real robots.

The list of benefits is short but sweet:

1. Researches in remote robot control get a wealth of information about what works and what doesn't, both in terms of robot design and in terms of user interface. The shoot-em-up nature of the game shouldn't be viewed as 'not appropriate for research' since it's a minor part of the main subject; how do you optimize the perception of remote surroundings and control movement in that environment.

2. The idea has the potential to make money in a commercial setting. Money you don't have to write grant propsals for is always nice. A project that funds itself would be very popular, don't you think?

3. It's fun!

Don't take it from me. Look up the popularity of Internet-based multiplayer gaming sites. If you can get some mileage out of that popularity, why ignore it?

Just an idea. Have fun with it.

Read about Xavier in the letters to the editor section of
2600 magazine. The letter appeared on page 52 of the Fall
1998 issue. BTW, in case you don't know, 2600 magazine
bills itself as the 'Hacker's Quarterly'. I monitor the mag
for reference to our company as we are frequently a target
of hackers.

Thought you might want to know!

I like the fact that you allow people to interact with Xavier. Found this site through Popular Science... like most people I've noticed. Could you send me some general blueprints on Xavier?
Perhaps a text to speech program so people who visit the Xavier webpage can have Xavier say what people think about him/her. Why was Xavier at the Smithsonian?
I'm 15 and I'm very interested in computers, programing, and robots. If anyone would like to send me a letter please do.

interesting work your team is doing... much potential. How are you dealing with the mechanic and power limitations? most of your papers listed appear to problem solve software and self learning/algorithmic issues(Mind you...I'm in no way dismissing it's essentiality, I'm just addressing the practical operations at this time). Have you any technical papers or schematics available for this unit? What type of power consumption does Xavier experience when giving it physical tasks. I've yet to revue all of your papers, how are you teaching Xavier to recognize such obsticles and problem solve it(both hardware & software)? Thanks and more to follow once i've reviewed your work further... keep it up!

here's a cool but useless idea:
attach touch sensitive pads on the exterior of xavior. program him to be ticklish in on those spots. make him say "hee, hee, hee quit! that tickles!" and then maybe he would move away or slap you to avoid further ticklement(is that a word?)

I found out about Xavier long ago from the many technical magazines
that I receive from my grandfather who is an electrical engineer.
More recently I was interested in coming to this webpage to the
advertisment shall I say in the viewbook for undergraduate admissions.
I am currently a high schooler at the Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, MO
and am the President of our technology club. For the upcoming year I have a couple of
robotics building and programming projects planned. I just wanted to find out more about
the robotics community at CMU. I think that this webpage is great.

Would be more interesting if the robot had actually *done* something while I was here, but I guess scientific progress has the first priority over his time...
I'll be back when he's up and about again.
