Some reports on the latest Balkan crisis are talking about two Albanian
languages, Geg (GHeg) and Tosk. I am told that Albanian once was written in a
GHeg version, but was changed to a Tosk. Is this true? What's the story behind?
How different are these two?

It seems that Tosk is the dialect of the rebellious south. Has this any bearing
on the current crisis in the country?

Which dialect (or standardization) is used by Albanians in the neighbouring
countries? And in diaspora? e g Albanians in USA, Italy, Greece ... Germany?

Thank you for elucidations.

Acknowledging the need to protect sci.lang from too much feuding, I haven't
cross-posted these questions yet.
