Yes, I was taught much the same at much the same time in similar
circumstances in far north Queensland.

I've tried to consistently adopt the apostrophe-free form though,
in response to the recommendations in the Australian Government
Publishing Service's "Style Manual for Authors, Editors and Printers
of Australian Government Publications" 3rd edition 1978.  [1978?
Maybe it's time I checked out a new edition!  :-) ]
