I recommend reading an essay of Virginia Woolf: "On not knowing Greek" in
which she argues in a similar vein, claiming that the language of ancient
Greece, and even of modern Mediterranean lands, reflects the friendly
weather and beautiful environment. She cites the willingness to open the
mouth wide in extended vowels, rather than clenching the jaw into clusters
of consonants.
