My mother, from North Carolina, says "roof" and "broom" with the [U] 
sound in "book."  More widespread in the US, I think, is the 
pronunciation of "hoof" with that sound.  I use it, certainly.  But I 
think I say "hooves" with [u] as in "tool"!
