: Check out the V8600 from R/C Systems. They advertise in Circuit Cellar
: Ink and (I think) EDN. This unit would take a little work to make
: into a product - it's just a small circuit board with a few components
: on it, but all it needs is a power supply, a speaker, and some
: connectors. It includes both a parallel and a serial interface (TTL, not
: RS-232). I use one in my home automation system and it works great. The
: TTS is pretty good, but you can also program words phonetically to
: get around problem pronunciations.

RC also makes the Doubletalk LT, which is a standalone, boxed unit with a
serial interface. Microtalk out of Texarkana, TX makes the LiteTalk,
which is a V8600 (with a somewhat customized ROM) packaged with a serial
interface, parallel (IBM PC) interface, speaker, volume control and a
rechargeable NiCd battery.
