I would also suggest that you visit the rec.arts.theatre.stagecraft
and sci.engr.lighting newsgroups.  Since the protocol was developed
for the theatrical lighting industrial, those groups focus in those
areas.  There seems to always be at least one running thread about DMX
as well as unoffical copies of the specifications.  Official copies
are only available through USITT as noted above.
