I recently worked with a group of middle school students on a
project using the $50.00 robotic arm you see in Edmond
Scientific and other science/electronic catelogs. It is fine
for demo purposes, we controlled the direction and on/off of
the three motors using a programed Basic Stamp, but it certainly
is not designed for any real usage. The major mechanical drawback
is the claw, it uses a spring as a u-joint in its driveshaft
and it can bind. Additionally, if the claw is closed too tight,
its gearing can bind.

I'd be interested in knowing what the next step up is.
