I recently saw a piece of wire that would be useful in a robot but I don't know where to find some. Maybe someone out there can help. This wire shrinks to 75%of its size when power is applied to it. We applied ~6 volts @ 1 amp and a 6" piece shrunk to about5 1/2 inches. I believe the wire goes under the name of BioMetal. It may be from a company called Mondo-tronics from Sunnyvale. It mayalso have the name Nitinol. Has anyone heard of this?
