I wrote an article on the use of smart sensors with Automated
Guided Vehicles which has been published in the April issue of
Sensors Magazine. The specific application discussed is a robot
for materials handling (Unmanned Towing Vehicle). The sidebar for
the article discusses the LaserNav position sensor which is used by
the robot to navigate.

Due to editing constraints my original last paragraph and
references had to be deleted. The original conclusion was:

The first Denning UTV was installed in late August 1992.
Used at first by the day shift, by October it was running three
shifts a day (with one 5 minute battery pack exchange), 5 days a
week. It has been well received both by the production workers and
management since it releases human resources from the dull and
potentially hazardous task of manually driving or pulling the carts
between stations.

The article was written while I worked for Denning Mobile Robotics.
It is my understanding that Denning is in business again.

Four former engineers from Denning, started a company called
Intelligent Solutions Inc. (ISI) in the fall of 1993. We have been
devoting our efforts to designing a new improved navigation sensor
called EZNAV. A brochure is available.
