In your article you mentioned changing from the circuit in the Robots Builders
Bonaza to one in the EE. You might consider a LM special application which uses
the LM1812 ultrasonic transciever IC. This chip is being phased out but was
still available from Digi-Key at last check. The LM special applications
manual has a very good, and reliable circuit for this chip. My university
used it last year of an autonomous vehicle and had very good results. If you
decide to keep working on the circuit that you are using, my experience is
that the 567 tone decoder works best when the tuning frequency is about 2.4
KHz above the received frequency.

I hope that this helps you, but remember this is just one mans opinion.
