=================================================================
ACM/RRL Mardi Gras Workshop on Robotics Applications for
Individuals with Motor Disabilities

Date: February 10th and 11th, 1994
Location: Baton Rouge, LA
Hosted by: Robotics Research Laboratory, Louisiana State University
                Department of Computer Science
Funded by: ACM SIG Discretionary Fund

This workshop, to be held on Thursday and Friday, February 10th
and 11th, 1994, will break new ground by bringing experts from the
field of robotics together with members of the community who have
motor disabilities (along with their advocates and service
providers) to discuss ways in which autonomous robotic systems
might be used to assist those with motor disabilities.

The agenda will include the discussion and evaluation of past work
in this area, in the context of practicality of implementation,
the extent to which such systems can or do meet real needs, and
what remains to be done. Building on this framework,
participants will discuss user needs, new and innovative
applications, and anticipated robotics capabilities in order to
develop a plan of attack for future research and development. At
the end of this workshop, a position paper, along with a copy of
proceedings, will be published and distributed to all interested
participants.

It is hoped that the workshop will serve to catalyze collaborative
research efforts devoted to filling the needs identified by
workshop participants, thereby speeding the development and
introduction of such technology. In particular, the aims of the
workshop organizers are:

To focus attention on the need to apply existing robotics
technology to meet the needs of individuals with motor
                disabilities.
To provide a forum to discuss which of the needs of
individuals with motor disabilities are most
                appropriately addressed by robotics technology.
To promote collaborative research efforts in this area by
providing a forum for the exchange of ideas.
