DTMF is a great choice if the throughput requirements are small. I have used
TouchTone(r) in two remote applications; one to send weather data down a 
12 VDC power line, and the other to control a pan-tilt mount on a closed
circuit TV antenna.

For the compressed air, You might try using an empty propane torch tank BUT
be conservative with the pressure and be sure to us a safety release (pop-off).

As for the baby monitors, if you have any scanner buffs in the neighborhood,
your probably going to keek them QUITE confused. :-)
