A public domain design for artificial intelligence available at URL

suggests not only that the sensory input channels do not terminate,
but also that the non-terminating sensory memory channels give rise
to intelligent consciousness by dint of their SIDEWAYS (orthogonal)
connections to large, flat arrays of concepts between the channels.

The mind-diagram below marks with an asterisk (*) a recognition tag
linking a single, consolidated engram of visual memory to a concept
in the abstract memory channel.  Such linkage is massively parallel
because hundreds of such associative tags are simultaneously making
contact with hundreds of redundant concept-fibers in one mini-grid:
